For those interested in learning a bit more about oat varieties and practices for organic production-July 19 at Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, MI (South of Kalamazoo). Come one and learn, share and experience. Free to all interested. MSU KBS Organic Oat Varieties and Production Field Day When: July 19, 5:00—7:00PM Where: Michigan State University W.K. Kellogg Biological Station 9693 North 40th Ave Hickory Corners, MI 49060 Do oats have a place in your rotation? Oats can serve multiple purposes in a cropping system including: small grain production (human and animal consumption), forage, and cover crops. Interest is also increasing in this versatile crop in part due the to the organic, locally sourced food market. Join our Michigan State University Extension educators for a discussion on the upcoming opportunities in oat production in Michigan. Featured speakers will discuss the topics of oat production in Michigan, organic variety trials, and oat diseases. While the trials at KBS have been managed organically, this trial will be of interest to conventional producers as well, exhibiting varietal differences under minimal inputs. Whether you are growing oats for food, feed, or forage under conventional or organic management, this event will have something to offer. The MSU Oat Field Day at KBS in Hickory Corners on July 19 will run from 5 – 7 p.m. beginning with registration and refreshments, followed by a plot tour and education programs featuring MSU researchers and local grain millers.
