Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to bring your attention to a session on strategies for mentoring
undergraduates in research
that I am co-convening with
Melissa Burt
and Rebecca Haacker. Submit your abstract today!

Session ID: 50301
Section: ED
Session Title: Mentoring the Whole Student: Strategies for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Session Description:

Research internships rely heavily on the efforts of scientific mentors to guide undergraduates through their research challenges and often take on additional supportive roles. In this session, speakers will present on successful mentoring structures, strategies for preparing mentors, and creating supportive environments that allow student interns to succeed. Coaching students to find multiple mentors who fulfill different roles is one strategy that leads to greater support and can alleviate the burden on the primary advisor by sharing the load with peers, friends, colleagues, and family. This session will explore why creating a supportive culture of mentoring for undergraduate student interns is important, and strategies that have been successful. Presentations that address the mentoring of students from a broad range of backgrounds are encouraged. Short talks will be followed by a discussion with the audience and speakers.
Primary Convener: Valerie Sloan (National Center for Atmospheric Research), Conveners: Rebecca Haacker (National Center for Atmospheric Research), Melissa Burt (Colorado State University)
Kind regards,
Valerie
