Update on the curriculum review:
- Attached is version 2.2 of the Learning Objectives White Paper. I have incorporated everyone’s comments, and you can see the changes with revision markings. PLEASE REVIEW this as we’re
close to finalizing it.
- On Wednesday, July 18 at 1pm, Sam Carter is coordinating a meeting of a few people to review the Entrepreneurial Mindset Index (EMI) as it relates to current courses that are in the
E&I Minor. If you are on Sam’s list, you know who you are, but we always welcome additional participation.
- Our next full meeting is July 30 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm in Eppley 412. The Learning Objectives and EMI documents will be completed by then and we will ratify them at the meeting.
At that point we’ll move onto the critical step of (re)evaluating courses against the new criteria and possibly making changes to the list of electives in the E&I Minor. To aid in your thinking, please see the attached spreadsheet (H/T to Stephanie Brewer)
that shows the courses in the Minor now, their enrollment, and the participation from students in the E&I Minor.
From my earlier email:
- Then we need to apply that instrument against the current courses in the Minor and consider new courses. Each college should be reviewing their courses for new entrants. I’d like this
task to be done by August 14. On August 15 we have a Faculty Advisory Meeting and at that meeting the committee can vote to accept the proposed changes. This action will allow me to initiate the activities through the Registrar’s Office and the University
Committee on Curriculum to ensure the changes get cemented this year. Otherwise we may lose a full cycle, so this date is really important.
- We will create thematic “roadmaps” that clarify for students which courses they should take based on their academic majors and career interests. Much of this is already done, but it
will need to be revised after we scrub the list of electives. While this is very important, it is less time sensitive.
Thanks. Have a great weekend.

As a follow-up to my email from last Friday:
- Please be sure to send any comments about the document (attached again) by
July 11.
- Prof. Forrest (Sam) Carter has agreed to spearhead the task of creating a checklist/tool against which we can evaluate courses for inclusion as electives in the E&I Minor. He said
in our meeting that he and the instructors who teach the largest enrollment courses in the Minor today (Ken Szymusiak for BUS 190, Danielle DeVoss and Amy Haimerl for CAS/AL 114, himself and Constantinos Coursaris for MI301) would probably be able to quickly
and simply create a set of criteria based on their own experiences. Please look for a follow-up from Sam. I’d like to have this done by
July 20 so we can move onto evaluating the courses against this instrument and ensure that we have this all completed by mid-August.
Thank you for your continued cooperation. I’ve added Constantinos to this thread. And I’ve copied this message to the ESHIPFACULTY Listserv which has a somewhat wider distribution—and we’re always eager to have additional help.
Sincerely,
From: Kane, Neil

Subject: Action Items from Curriculum Review Committee Meeting for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
We had a great discussion at yesterday’s meeting. Here is a summary of action items.
- We now have a solid (near-final) draft of a Learning Objectives document. It is attached. PLEASE REVIEW and send comments by Wednesday, July 11. Once I incorporate comments/suggestions,
we will deem the document to have been ratified by this committee. Please use revision markings, and send the document back to me directly. I will manage version control and will accommodate as many changes as possible. You can ignore the version I sent yesterday.
- The next step is to create a checklist/instrument/tool against which we can evaluate courses for inclusion as electives in the Minor. A committee is in formation to handle that task,
and I’d like it to be done by July 20.
Many thanks to everyone for their assistance. Please let me know if you have any questions.

My *big* apologies for sending this so late. Attached is a draft of the whitepaper that the subcommittee created. The objective of today’s meeting is to ratify this document (it will need further editing and clean-up) and then move
on toward figuring out how to create a set of “criteria” or guidelines that can be applied against every course that becomes an elective in the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Subject: RE: Next E&I Curriculum Review Committee Meeting
The subcommittee that is working on the Learning Objectives (Ken, Danielle, Aubrey and myself) met today and we expect to have our document finalized by the end of next week. We’ll circulate it after that, and then hopefully take comments
or adopt it at this meeting that Leigh Anne is scheduling.
The next step after that will be to determine how to characterize the expectations of courses that become electives in the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. We agreed that tightening up the criteria and making it more objective
would be beneficial, and that’s what I hope to tackle in this meeting.
Thanks. Please let me know if you have any questions or if any additional pre-reading would be helpful.
