Introduction

Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with mathematical methods that find use in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. In the past, practical applications have motivated the development of mathematical theories, which then became the subject of study in pure mathematics where abstract concepts are studied for their own sake. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics which is also referred to as theoretical mathematics.

Another view is that pure / theoretical mathematics is not necessarily applied mathematics: it is possible to study abstract entities with respect to their intrinsic nature and not be concerned with how they manifest in the real world. Even though the pure and applied viewpoints are distinct philosophical positions, in practice there is much overlap in the activity of pure and applied mathematicians. International business consists of trades and transactions at a global level. These include the trade of goods, services, technology, capital and/or knowledge. Such activity often employs mathematics for areas related to international business such as finance, general management, sales & marketing, supply chain management, distribution, and economics.

Objective

The primary objective of the proposed publication is that of Reference material for scholars and business executives who need to understand the importance of applied and theoretical mathematics in international business in the 21st century. The secondary objective is to provide a foundation for other related publications on the subject area.

Target Audience

The primary intended audience is scholars who have the need for qualified Reference material regarding the subject matter of the proposed publication as outlined above. While having academic rigor, the book will be written in a way such that it can also be understood by non-academics and non-specialists who have the educational background to comprehend the importance of the proposed publication.
