Michigan MDNR Fisheries Division Summer Job Posting


Position: We will be hiring a Short-term State Worker located at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Plainwell Fisheries Office, 621 N. 10th St. Plainwell MI 49080. This is a temporary, non-career, position.

Wage: State worker hourly pay rates are $9.99 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous DNR experience; $10.71 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in 2017, and $11.41 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in each of 2016 and 2017.

Duration: Position is considered a part time position with up to 17 weeks or (680 hours). Position starting dates are June and ending when hours are completed or by September 30th. The actual starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible.  Daily work hours include mostly day shifts but may include some weekends scheduled as needed. Hours worked will be 40 per week with limited overtime shifts.

Duties:  The job duties include maintaining equipment, repair of entrapment netting gear and reading fish ladder passage files on the computer. Experience will be gained by assisting on stream and lake surveys (using a full array of sampling gear including electrofishing), walleye pond rearing and harvesting, and fish ladder cleaning and maintenance.  Other duties will be assigned as needed.

Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly-motivated individuals interested in performing fisheries-related fieldwork that often involves strenuous physical labor in all types of weather. Candidates must be able to lift heavy objects (at least 50 lbs.)  Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries field experience, college fisheries related coarse work, general knowledge of fish identification, and experience with power tools and equipment.  Must be 18 years old, possess a current Michigan driver’s license and have an excellent driving record. Employment with the DNR is subject to Civil Service rules and regulations of the State of Michigan.  A variety of positions are classified as State Worker 4 positions, but duties vary widely by position.
