Garden and RC Updates, SNAP Gardens Enrollment Assistance, and More!

Garden and Registration Updates

Gardens are starting to be opened and will continue over the next couple of weeks, with the goal of having all gardens open by Memorial Day at the latest. They will most likely be open well before that! Everyone will have plenty of time to get their gardens in to maximize the growing season.

We open gardens based on 3 factors:
  • Weather & soil conditions
  • Time
  • How full the garden is
When the garden has been tilled and plotted, you will receive a follow up call or email with your plot assignment and information specific to your site. A map with plot assignments will also be posted at the garden. In the meantime, please continue to pick up seeds and plants at the RC and harden them off at home before planting. If you haven’t yet signed up for a plot, Clifford Park, Orchard Court, Towar (pictured), and Lilac still have space and would love to have you join this year!

You can register for your home garden at the Resource Center, but to facilitate the check-in process we recommend pre-registering online if you are able. The same goes for any of the 19 community gardens GP registers directly. For all the other gardens in the GP network, if you haven't been in contact with the Garden Leader, you can register at the RC.

Resource Center Updates

There are a few cold-weather plants still available that are in great shape. Remember that any seedlings will need an additional couple weeks of hardening before being planted outdoors. Tomatoes, peppers etc. will be available starting RC open hours on Wednesday, May 16.

If you are interested in helping during Resource Center open hour shifts in the season ahead, contact Donny for details. There is also opportunity to volunteer in the Demo Garden Wednesdays from 10:30 - 12:30, and Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:00.

Resource Center May Open Hours
Tuesdays, 22nd & 29th:  5:00-7:00pm
All Wednesdays: 10:00am-1:00pm
All Thursdays: 5pm-7pm
Saturday,19th: 10:00am-1:00pm

Finally, a good reference for all gardeners is the Lansing Area Community Garden Resource Guide, which has been updated for 2018.

SNAP Gardens Enrollment Assistance

Did you know that SNAP EBT benefits (food stamps) can be used to purchase food-producing plants and seeds? To find a retailer near you that welcomes SNAP EBT customers, use the SNAP Retailer Locator at http://www.snapretailerlocator.com. Many farmers markets now accept SNAP as well.

If you believe you qualify for SNAP benefits but have not enrolled, during RC open hours on May 9th and 10th, GLFB SNAP Outreach Coordinator Julie Anderson will be on-site to answer questions and assist with enrolling in the SNAP program. Valid ID required. Please note that your SNAP application will still need to be submitted to and approved by DHHS.

For more information, visit SNAP Gardens.

Let There Be Trees!

In a collaborative effort with the Ingham County Land Bank and other local organizations, a group of area residents gathered last Sunday at Foster Community Park to plant 21 native or near-native trees. This project, part of the on-going Foster Park Revitalization program, was made possible through a grant from the DNR. Thank you to all those who helped make the home of the Resource Center a better place to be!

"One of the greatest virtues of gardening is this perpetual renewal of youth and spring, of promise of flower and fruit that can always be read in the open book of the garden, but housed with an eye to see, and a mind to understand."
