University of California Cooperative Extension is seeking candidates for a new regional Cooperative Extension advisor position to be based in San Jose, CA. Closing Date: May 4, 2018 The Cooperative Extension (CE) advisor for urban agriculture & food systems will conduct a multi-county extension, education and applied research program that addresses the needs of producers and decision makers in an emerging and rapidly growing urban food production systems—the cultivation, processing, and distribution of food in urban areas and related policy. The CE advisor will need an understanding of agricultural production as well as land-use planning and food security issues. There is a great need for research-based information to inform city and county decision makers on how to craft agriculture and food security policies to support successful food production and distribution, create linkages between urban consumers and peri-urban producers, and meet the challenge of uneven food access in urban areas. This CE advisor has a unique opportunity to create linkages between UC, the Silicon Valley’s high tech industry, urban and peri-urban growers, urban planners and regulatory agencies, community organizations, extension services, and farmer education networks, and underserved communities around the production of healthy food.
