Drawing inspiration from Freedom Schools, CoFED's Summer Co-op
Academy (SCA) is a cooperative business boot camp that promotes
education for the transformation and liberation of our collective
communities. This year it will be held at Earthseed Land Co-operative
in Durham, North Carolina from July 27th to August 2nd. Art from Earthseed Land
Co-operative Earthseed Land Co-operative describes themselves as, "a group of 8
black and brown Visionaries who walk out our belief in abundance by
collaborating to acquire land for shared affordable housing,
sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, community
ritual and education space. Our collective is made up of farmers,
entrepreneurs, professionals, and teachers who are currently engaged
in creating alternative models for sustainability, equity, and
cooperation within communities of color." At the Summer Co-op Academy, a week-long
cooperative business bootcamp for youth-led co-ops at all stages of
development, you'll have the opportunity to (un)learn how food co-ops
can contribute to the historical struggles for decolonization,
reparations, and collective liberation in the food system! Our
Cooperative Growth Curriculum, which you'll receive at the Academy,
uniquely centers racial, economic, and gender justice in cooperative
development. It's a powerful tool whether you're thinking about
starting a co-op, in the start-up phase, or looking to help your co-op
evolve. As a participant, you'll:
- Meet other young people developing a range of co-ops in the food
system
- Learn best practices in cooperative business development and
management
- Share strategies to dismantle oppression in the food system and
advance food and land sovereignty
- Connect with local solidarity economy projects, including food
co-ops
- Heal, regenerate and have fun!
The Racial Justice Fellowship is an opportunity
for you to implement your passion project for justice in the food
system. If awarded the Fellowship, you'll receive a $5,000 summer
stipend, mentorship throughout your project period, and a full
scholarship to the Summer Co-op Academy. You'll also benefit from
networking and training opportunities during and after your
Fellowship. You can (and should!) apply to
both opportunities if you're age 18-30 and live in the
U.S. No college experience
necessary! Graduates from Summer Co-op
Academy 2017 in Tennessee at the Highlander Center! Down to take your
next step in the food justice movement? Learn
