Tuesday, March 6th 12:00 – 1:30 PM Kiva, Erickson Hall (Zoom Teleconference details below)

Roger Ideishi, JD, OT/L, FAOTA; Professor of Instruction in Rehabilitation Sciences,

Program Director, Temple University.

“The Art of Inclusion”

Roger I. Ideishi has worked to provide community access and opportunity for children with diverse sensory and cognitive abilities. He advises community organizations on building meaningful learning experiences for children and their families. The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), Segerstrom Center for the Arts (Costa Mesa, CA), Flint Institute of Arts (Flint, MI), Michigan Council of Arts & Cultural Affairs (Lansing, MI), Syracuse Stage (Syracuse, NY), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra & Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, PA), New Jersey Center for Aquatic Science (Camden, NJ), Delaware Theatre Company (Wilmington, DE), People’s Light & Theater (Malvern, PA), Pennsylvania Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, & Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia, PA) are some of the community organizations where he advises.

He is an advocate of experiential, community, and service-based learning. He and his students have collaborated with various organizations to serve vital community interests resulting in the creation of outdoor play spaces, learning gardens, community mosaic murals, and movement/arts based curricula to enhance the quality of life for children and families. He is currently a principal investigator on a funded project examining the cultural and linguistic factors for English language learning families of children with autism interfacing with the health, education, and community service systems. He is a co-investigator on a Canadian Institute of Health Research international project (Canada, Australia, USA) exploring the factors, impacts, and outcomes of engagement in pediatric rehabilitation settings.

Would you like to meet with Roger Ideishi?

Consultations at your space or individual meetings may be scheduled on Monday, March 5th on a first come basis, please email Angie Kankula if you would like to attend. [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

“When Ideishi goes to a museum or theater to help create more inclusive experiences, he takes many factors into consideration—asking questions like whether there’s a moment in a performance that may be too loud or too dark for a person with a sensory challenge, or what a family with a child who has autism might need in advance to feel comfortable exploring an exhibit. Accommodations have been widely created for people with physical disabilities, Ideishi explains, but for people with cognitive disabilities or people who process sensations like touch, sound and light differently, support isn’t always a consideration.”
