Emerging markets in Latin America and the world face several challenges for economic growth and wealth creation in a way that is inclusive and contributes to sustainable peace. Regional partnerships are being challenged as the benefits of globalization are questioned and nations look inward. What is the role that business can play in giving value to local communities while promoting globalization, economic integration and regional strategies? In the BALAS 2018 conference in San Diego, we would like to address these issues, exploring answers to questions like:

In addition to the special Theme Tracks and papers in all areas of business and economics in Latin America and the Caribbean, several keynote speakers have been confirmed with additional invitations pending.  Confirmed keynote speakers include:

 Stuart L. Hart: “The Role of Business in Creating Peace and Prosperity”

Stuart L. Hart is one of the world's top authorities on the implications of environment and poverty for business strategy.  With C.K. Prahalad, Prof. Hart wrote the 2002 article "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid", later expanded into a book of the same name. He is author of the best-selling book Capitalism at the Crossroads: The Unlimited Business Opportunities in Solving the World's Most Difficult Problems as well as several scholarly articles and publications.  He holds the S.C. Johnson Chair of Sustainable Global Enterprise and Professor of Management at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he founded the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise. 

Amb. Jamal Khokhar: “Building Bridges Across the Americas”

Ambassador Jamal Khokhar served as Canada’s ambassador to Brazil and previously served as chief of staff to the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in Washington, D.C.  While at the IADB he led the creation of a department focused on establishing innovative partnerships with the private sector. His other key appointments have included being Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean responsible for the full range of Canada’s bilateral engagement in the region. In this capacity, he was instrumental in developing Canada’s Americas Strategy.  Currently he is the President and CEO of the Institute of the Americas.

Lourdes S. Casanova: “Emerging Market Multinationals: Growth in the Americas through Innovation”

Lourdes Casanova, a Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of the Emerging Markets Institute at the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University, formerly at INSEAD, specializes in international business with a focus on emerging markets multinationals. She has recently released the Emerging Market Multinationals Report (EMR) which explores the rise of Emerging Market Multinationals (eMNCs) and their broader implications. The increasing weight and influence of emerging economies in the world, brings about radical changes in a wide array of areas, through the displacement of trade and investment flows, the creation of new business models, and the emergence of a new geography of global innovation.
