Erika Muhammad’s vision began with the gift of two tomato plants from her father. She overcame his challenge not to kill the plants, and eventually the taste of fresh tomatoes launched her desire to feed her family nutrient-dense, chemical-free foods. Now, Erika produces vegetables and pasture-raised eggs on her own farm in Dallas.

Like Erika, Dan DeSutter has a vision for his farm that goes beyond making his business work. Farming about 4,500 acres in Indiana, Dan has increasingly diversified his rotation to promote soil health. He has used cover crops over the last decade and no-till management for over two decades. Dan is transitioning some fields to organic production and grazing cattle on cover crops.

Erika and Dan will join dozens of other farmers and ranchers at the Our Farms, Our Future Conference <> to share their stories about how diverse approaches to agriculture contribute to a more sustainable future.

Hosted by the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) <> program and the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT/ATTRA) <>, the conference will feature plenary sessions  <>and workshops <> for grain, livestock and specialty crop producers, as well as material relevant to researchers, educators, agency leaders and nonprofit representatives. Eight farm tours <> will feature sustainable models of rural and urban agricultural production within the vibrant St. Louis food system.
