Dear Neil,

I have had the pleasure of working closely with your colleague Marcy O'Neil for the past several months as she established herself as a leader in the SolutionsU community of educators.  She told me about the undergraduate entrepreneurship program that you run, and I am reaching out to you today because I believe that our resources would also be of interest to you and your colleagues.  Let me explain.

SolutionsU is a project of the Solutions Journalism Network (SJN), a nonprofit organization that works to rebalance the news so that what we read, hear and listen to each day isn't just problems, but also solutions. SJN works with newsrooms and universities to train journalists and future journalists in how to do this type of reporting on society’s toughest challenges, and SolutionsU works to disseminate these stories across society, beginning with higher education.

As part of this mission, we provide our resources to educators at no cost.

SolutionsU just launched in August 2017, and already we are nearly 200 faculty (and administrators) strong, teaching in a range of disciplines at more than 100 college campuses across the country. Solutions journalism stories add value and creativity to courses in disciplines ranging from economics and environmental studies to business, social entrepreneurship and, as Marcy has demonstrated, anthropology. These resources complement or enhance texts or journal articles with nuanced, diverse, and continuously updated stories about people around the world working to create change.

If other MSU faculty are half as ambitious and motivated as Marcy, then MSU is at the top of our list of institutions that we would like to partner with in getting these stories into the classroom!

I am sending along our first SolutionsU Educator Newsletter, as well as an invitation to you to join our growing community.  Please take a look, and if you wouldn't mind letting me know what you think, I would appreciate it. I also have colleagues nearby at U of Michigan Flint and U of Michigan Ann Arbor, and if we have sufficient interest between the three institutions, I could come out in January and do a faculty workshop.

Thank you, and best wishes for a successful wrap up to the fall semester!

Katherine

PS – In the Featured Resources section of the Newsletter below, you’ll find an assignment you could send home with your students (or do yourself) over the upcoming holiday break.  It will get them (and you) started using SolutionsU!

Educator Newsletter

November 15, 2017

Happy Thursday, Neil!

Welcome to the first SolutionsU Educator Newsletter!

I’ll be reaching out to you every few weeks with updates on new teaching resources and the creative ways faculty are integrating them into their classrooms.  I'll also be sharing ideas and suggestions with you about how to turn solutions journalism stories into meaningful assignments and relevant course materials.

As educators, we want our students to have a balanced perspective on the world, and to leave our institutions prepared to participate in solving social problems. Not all students are intent on becoming leaders in social change, but all students should graduate with the knowledge that solutions are possible.  My goal is to help you make sure that happens!

Please reach out and let me know how I can support you in this process!

  • Assignments to engage students in exploring issues, analyzing strategies, applying theories and imagining (or even creating) solutions.
  • Modules & Syllabi shared by faculty who have integrated SolutionsU resources throughout the quarter or semester.
  • How To Guides with step-by-step instructions for using our resources.
  • Assignment Ideas based on the creative ways faculty are using solutions journalism in their classrooms.

Marcy had just learned about SolutionsU when her department chair asked her to design and teach a new course on the Anthropology of Social Movements.  At first, she thought she might use a few solutions journalism stories as supplemental readings; then she discovered the breadth and depth of the stories on the Solutions Story Tracker and realized she could do much more. She wound up creating seven collections of stories with discussion questions on key topics and concepts -- each with a video or audio component to jump-start classroom discussions -- as well as two assignments that sent her students to SolutionsU.

Check out her syllabus and assignments on the Teaching Resources page of SolutionsU, and read her story on our SolutionsU blog.

A Daily Dose of Solutions  (or Solutions to Share with Family over the holidays)

As I was putting the finishing touches on the Educator Newsletter this morning, Marcy O'Neil (featured above) shared with me how she's adapting the Daily Dose of Solutions assignment for her class. It's such a clever idea that I decided to share it with all of you here.

On the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving break, Marcy will have her students bring their laptops to class and spend 30 minutes or so on Discover, reading stories on any topic or strategy they want. Then, she'll ask them to pick one to share with family and friends over the upcoming holiday.

I am looking forward to hearing stories from her students about the conversations they had over dinner about solutions to social problems!

SolutionsU Teaching
Resources Survey

As we gear up to begin our next stage of developing SolutionsU Teaching Resources, we need to know how you've used the resources so far, and your plans for 2018.

Watch for the SolutionsU Teaching Resources Survey in your inbox next week. It's just a quick snapshot of how many faculty are teaching with solutions journalism stories, and how many students they're reaching. It won't take more than two to three minutes to complete. You're also welcome to complete it now from the link above.

Also, it's not too late to introduce
your students to SolutionsU this fall!

Check out ways to Leverage the power of solutions journalism with "Discover," or create a collection for your students to read. If you'd like some help, please reach out. I'd love to hear from you.
