Subject: There Comes a Time.....

Greetings OAC Friends and Family:

There comes a time in the evolution of all successful non-profits for the Founder to pass the torch to fresher faces with more youthful energy, ideas, and passions. For me that time is December 31st. For the past five years, I have had the amazing opportunity to watch Outdoor Adventure Clubs of Greater Cincinnati grow and prosper from just three OACs in the 2012-2013 school year to twenty-four Clubs as we begin 2017-2018. I have also witnessed OAC's reach expand beyond our school based Clubs to an ever-increasing number of community based Clubs--including Brighton Center, Homeward Bound Shelter, Villedge, CITI Camp, Child Focus, and Lighthouse Youth Services--each serving commendably the needs of at-risk youth throughout the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky communities. OAC now serves approximately 100 urban teens each week throughout the school year and during the summer. Within the next few months, we will have provided a total of over 10,000 outdoor adventures for urban teens who most likely would never have been able to experience these life changing treks into nature.

In addition, I’ve had the good fortune to be associated with amazingly dedicated staff, extremely devoted volunteers, wonderfully talented Board of Directors, and incredibly generous donors and sponsors without whom the mission of this organization could never have been realized. I'm especially grateful to Brewster Rhoads who helped me bring OAC to life, who served as our first Board President, and who remains unselfishly active as Board Member, mentor, cheerleader, and close personal friend. I'm also indebted to Miriam Wise who has shepherded OAC's fundraising efforts through many lean times, who has worked tirelessly to expand and diversify our donor base, who has managed scores of Happy Hour "friend raisers" and monthly raffles, and who has been tremendously successful making the Ohio River Paddlefest our single largest fundraising event--netting over $160,000 for OAC over the past two years. Lastly, I’m eternally thankful to Chelsea Manning, who even in death, inspires all of us to be the compassionate beacons of light that so many of our OAC kids need in their ever-challenging lives. She has made, and continues to make, all of us better people for having known her.

As Nancy and I head off into the sunset to explore and check off the 25 National Parks remaining on our bucket list, I leave OAC knowing it's in very capable hands moving forward. Our Board has been energized by recent additions eager to increase revenue and to operate efficiently. Our new Program Managers Clint Victor (School-Based Clubs) and Paige Young (Community-Based Clubs) have taken charge and made their marks on day-to-day programming. Our Lead Outdoor Specialists Amy Wong and Lindsey Keller have stepped up to provide much needed logistical support. Our contract marketing consultant (Ward Hopkins) and grant writers (Keith Schneider and Stephanie Taylor) are hard at work increasing awareness of OAC's mission and expanding and diversifying our donor base. Additionally, our accountant (Matt Ackermann) is crunching numbers and keeping everyone apprised of and responsible for OAC's bottom line.

Our Board Search Committee is well on its way to fill my vacancy with an amazing Executive Director who will take OAC to new heights and insure its mission continues for years to come. Attached please find the Search Committee's post for OAC Executive Director that will hit non-profit newsletters in the next few days. Feel free to share this post with any potential candidates whom you think might be interested in and capable of fulfilling exceptionally well the responsibilities described therein. Applicants may send their cover letters and resumes to our Board President Katie Kemme at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> through November 10th. The Search Committee will then assess and interview candidates for the position, with a goal of making the hire by early December. I will of course be available as consult throughout the hiring process and infinitely thereafter to help the new Executive Director excel in her/his new role. You'll also find me on the river, on the bike trail, on the hiking trail, and at the skating rink with OAC students. advisers, staff, and volunteers each Saturday through December

Lastly, I want to thank all of you who have been part of this amazing effort for you time, energy, and passion in helping me get more urban teens out into nature for healthy outdoor recreation, education, and conservation opportunities at no expense to participants. I couldn't have done this without you. Keep up the good work. Now everyone…..please go outside and play:-)
