Learn organic gardening and farming skills and concepts at the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture, a six-month, hands-on residential training program organized by the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz. In 2017, the Apprenticeship celebrates its 50th anniversary of training new organic farmers and gardeners.

We are excited to be accepting applications for the 2018 program, with a deadline of September 30, 2017 for domestic applicants. We welcome people of all backgrounds to participate. Please help us spread the word!

The program offers:
  • six months of full-time education and training in organic gardening and small-scale sustainable farming
  • formal instruction and hands-on practical skill building
  • training in specialty crops, cut flowers, small-scale orchards
  • education in topics such as soil management, composting, pest and weed control, crop planning, irrigation, farm equipment, direct marketing techniques, and social issues within the food system
  • over 50 years of experience training new organic farmers and gardeners in a university setting 
The Program Course Fee for 2018 is set at $6,000, and the Program Food Fee is $600. On-site housing in tent cabins is offered at no additional cost. A range of course fee waivers (scholarships) is offered, as described below. 
  • full and partial course fee waivers are available for those with financial need
  • AmeriCorps funding is accepted
  • qualified military veterans can apply for the Matthew Raiford Veteran Scholarship
  • some military veterans rehabilitation funding is accepted
  • A Simply Organic Course Fee Waiver is provided to one apprentice who is interested in making a career in organic farming and sustainable agriculture
  • The Food Justice and Equity Scholarship, established in 2016, can help to fund incoming apprentices committed to and engaged in food justice & equity in their communities, and/or responsible stewardship of the Earth

Graduates have established their own commercial farms and market gardens, developed farm- and garden-based educational programs, run urban garden programs, and more. The Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) is hiring a Field Site Assistant Manager. Initial review of applications: September 28, 2017.

The Field Site Assistant Manager (view job description) will aid in all aspects of education, production, and research in the UCSC/CASFS Farm's Field Site, which currently covers ~11 acres of tractor cultivated grounds. The Assistant Manager will be heavily involved in facilitating the management of the fields to support the diverse programmatic offerings atCASFS including but not limited to:
  • The Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture
  • Mentoring Advanced Apprentices
  • Environmental Studies class field trials and visits
  • and more!
Daily activities will involve crew management, marketing management and support, irrigation management and support, tractor driving and implement use, purchasing, various record keeping and reporting duties, and more.
