> Dear GeoEd Colleagues,
>
> Lauren Holder, Angie Van Boening and I are convening a topical session at the 2017 GSA, and with the August 1 abstract submission deadline looming, we would like to encourage you to consider a submission to this session. Our research community has made some really exciting strides in this area, and we look forward to an engaging discussion of methods and results.

> This session presents evidence-based studies that aim to make thinking visible in order to understand geologic problem solving. We encourage rigorous research investigating approaches and techniques to externalize, document, and understand geologic thinking and cognition.

> And for a little more background:
> In recent years, applications of cognitive science and learning science tools, methods and perspectives have significantly advanced research on geosciences learning and practice. Research ranging from novices in classroom settings to experts working in professional workplaces has benefited from insights from approaches rooted in observations of deliberate physical actions related to active problem solving and decision making. These have encompassed aspects of embodied cognition, including eye tracking, gesture, navigation, and other physical actions. These studies have also been complemented by investigations of language use, linguistic metaphor and culturally-mediated cognition. The combined suite of actions and expressions have been shown to concept formation and learning in the geosciences. This session seeks to provide a specific venue for research in this area.
