Geneva, Switzerland

Dear Colleagues,

Save the date for the two high-level UNCTAD events this autumn, that will discuss the 2017 World Investment Report (entitled: Investment and the Digital Economy), scheduled for launching on 7th June 2017.

Trade and Development Board Session on the World Investment Report 2017, 12 September 2017, Palais des Nations, Geneva

Annual International Investment Agreements (IIA) Conference, 9-11 October 2017, Palais des Nations, Geneva

Investment and the Digital Economy: Trade and Development Board Meeting (64th session) on the World Investment Report 2017, 12 September 2017, 15-18 hours, Palais des Nations, Geneva

This half-day, high-level discussion on the World Investment Report 2017 is part of the Trade and Development Board Meeting, taking place from 11 to 22 September 2017.

Topic: The Trade and Development Board, UNCTAD's governing body, will discuss the World Investment Report 2017 (to be launched on 7 June 2017).

This year’s Report presents foreign direct investment (FDI) trends and prospects at global, regional and national levels. With the subtitle Investment and the Digital Economy, the Report investigates the internationalization patterns of digital multinational enterprises, as well as the effect of digitalization on global companies across all industries. It provides insights to policymakers on how the digital economy impacts investment policies and how investment policy can support digital development, with a view towards achieving the SDGs.

Format: A high-level panel will share insights and experiences based on UNCTAD's policy framework for investment in the digital economy.

Participants: 193 Members of UNCTAD's Trade and Development Board as well as high-level investment thought leaders and experts, as well as decision makers from the private sector, civil society and intergovernmental organizations.

Phase 2 of IIA Reform: Annual International Investment Agreements (IIA) Conference, 9-11 October 2017, Palais des Nations, Geneva

This 3-day high-level conference will carry IIA reform to the next phase, building at a series of UNCTAD investment conferences including the World Investment Forum 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Topic:  IIA reform has made significant progress, with a large number of countries following UNCTAD's Road Map for IIA Reform (phase 1 of IIA reform). However, much work remains to be done to modernize the existing stock of "old-generation" IIAs (phase 2 of IIA reform). The World Investment Report 2017 sets out and discusses 10 options to reform old-generation treaties that countries can adapt and adopt in line with their specific reform objectives. Based on a stocktaking of reform and policy options at hand, the Annual IIA Conference will share experiences and identify best practices for phase 2 of IIA reform.

Participants: High-level IIA negotiators from developing, developed and transition economies, as well as representatives from civil society, intergovernmental organizations and the private sector.

Online registration will be available on UNCTAD’s registration portal prior to the events.

We look forward to seeing you at these events.

Best regards,
