Dear Colleagues: You are most likely aware of widespread concern about the quality and effectiveness of undergraduate STEM education. If you or someone you know is interested in developing and disseminating effective and empirically-validated ways of teaching STEM subjects, please consider applying to attend a Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching<http://www.summerinstitutes.org/>. All Summer Institutes are led by experienced faculty leaders and facilitators, and are designed to incorporate contributions from participants in an engaging and intensive format. The Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching are sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Helmsley Charitable Trust and Yale Center for Teaching and Learning. In 2017, six regional Summer Institutes will be offered: June 5-10, 2017: Northstar (University of Minnesota) - HHMI-funded June 19-23, 2017: California (University of California, San Diego) - Helmsley-funded June 20-23, 2017: Northwest (University of Oregon) - HHMI-funded June 25-29, 2017: Northeast (University of Connecticut) - Helmsley-funded July 17-21, 2017: Gulf Coast (Louisiana State University) - Helmsley-funded July 24-28: Midwest (University of Chicago) - HHMI-funded We encourage applicants from research-intensive institutions to apply to HHMI-funded sites and applicants from teaching-intensive institutions to apply to Helmsley-funded sites. However, we welcome applicants from any institution or geographic area (including international locations) to apply to any of our six regional sites. Since 2004, 345 colleges and universities from across the United States have sent faculty and teaching staff to the institutes. The program was founded by Professor Jo Handelsman and Professor Bill Wood in response to a national call to improve college science teaching. Our participants are committed to delivering high-quality teaching. They come to learn new instructional approaches and feel empowered by networking with like-minded teachers. Participants in the Summer Institutes consider the experience a great success; most of the approximately 1,400 program alumni reported in 2014 that the training has permanently changed their teaching.
