Nine out of the 15 former Soviet Republics are member states and two are associate members. The CIS has few supranational powers, but aims to be more than a purely symbolic organization, nominally possessing coordinating powers in the realm of trade, finance, lawmaking, and security. It has also promoted cooperation on cross-border crime prevention. Furthermore, eight of the nine CIS member states participate in the CIS Free Trade Area. Three organizations are under the CIS overview; namely, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the Union State. While the first and the second are military and economic alliances, the latter aims to reach a confederation between Russia and Belarus with a common government, flag, and currency. The book should be published because many of the existing works on the region do not cover in one volume all of the topics envisaged in this proposal. Objective The primary objective of the proposed publication is that of Reference material for scholars and business executives who need to understand the importance and influence of the CIS and Eurasia in the 21st century. The secondary objective is to provide a foundation for other related publications on the subject area. The book should be published because many of the existing works on the region do not cover in one volume all of the topics envisaged in this proposal. Target Audience The primary intended audience is scholars who have the need for qualified Reference material regarding the subject matter of the proposed publication as outlined above. While having academic rigor, the book will be written in a way such that it can also be understood by non-academics and non-specialists who have the educational background to comprehend the importance of the proposed publication.
