General abstract:
String theory predicts that the universe should have six extra
dimensions.  But what is the shape of these extra dimensions?  It turns
out that more than one shape may produce the same physical consequences.
This observation astonished mathematicians and led to the field of math
and physics research known as "mirror symmetry".  We'll describe how to
use special polygons and polyhedra to write equations for the extra
dimensions and their "mirror" counterparts.

I'll introduce Batyrev's mirror symmetry construction via reflexive
polytopes, emphasizing elementary techniques and intuition.
