Dear O and transitioning Farmer friends (those who grow field crops),

I am working with two soil scientists, Dr. Jen Blesh from U of Mich and Dr. Sieg Snapp from Michigan State Univ on writing a grant to research cover crop combinations for organic and transitioning farms in Michigan.

 

We are applying to USDA Organic Transition grant for funds for 2018-2020 years (3 year grant). We hope some of you will be interested in joining us in the research. We want to do some basic science studies in the greenhouses that will build on what happens in the fields (but of course). So we will ask some of you to participate with some on-farm research and will provide those who work with us with $upport of course!

 

If funded we will seek 30 organic field crop farmers perhaps like yourself, some who are transitioning and some certified, to try combinations of cover crops on their farms.

 

So I ask these 4 questions:

1. Would YOU be interested in participation in such a project?
2. What cover crop combinations would you like to try (3 way and 6 way (or more)
3. From the crops that you now grow- where do you see cover crops fitting in your farm plan?
4. What are some key reasons you would like to grow a mixture of cover crops?  Your goals?
