We’re introducing a completely new theme for the Goldschmidt meeting in 2017, Education. While teaching and outreach is part of our jobs as academics, we’ve not previously been able to share our innovative, exciting and great practice at the international Goldschmidt conference. Now we can.This year we’re introducing two pilot sessions to offer the opportunity to share and discuss the way we communicate geochemistry and engage with students and other stakeholders. In recognition of the importance of this new area the organising committee have allowed anyone submitting to another session as first author to also submit a second abstract in either session of the education theme. Outreach in the community may be educating or encouraging debate of important issues such as climate change and must engage the local community using accessible language and activities. Outreach in schools inspires the next generation of Geoscientists. This session provides an opportunity to share innovative ideas and develop collaborations. We welcome examples of good practice and innovative ideas from Universities, Schools and Museums.
Session 23B: Technology Enhanced Learning in Geoscience Teaching (https://goldschmidt.info/2017/program/programViewThemes)Convenors: Ariel Anbar, Simon KelleyKeynote: tbaSummary:Most Colleges and Universities now use a blend of face-to-face and on-line materials for teaching Geosciences. While face-to-face remains the dominant style, using a combination of lectures, practicals and fieldwork, on-line teaching has seen huge expansion and innovation. Videos, virtual field trips, Gigapan imagery, virtual microscopy, maps, datasets, interactive visualizations and simulations, and game-inspired interactives, are all finding their way into geoscience pedagogy, whether as enrichment materials in traditional courses, as the backbone of "flipped" classrooms, or the foundation of fully online courses (including Massive Open Online Courses). This session invites examples of technology enhanced learning in the geosciences, and of evidence-based research into the effectiveness of these innovative approaches.
