The meeting will be held in the city of São Paulo, on August 24th and 25th
2017, hopefully with the support of the Academy of Korean Studies and the

The VIII EECAL is the continuation of a series of conferences that, since

The main objectives of VIII EECAL are:

• Deepen discussions about Latin America and Korea relations and build a
network of specialists in Korean Studies in Latin America;
• Disseminate the academic contributions of Latin American scholars and
highlight its specificity regarding Korean Studies;
• Contribute to improvement of mutual understanding between Korea and Latin
America; strengthen common interests and delivering efforts to address its
challenges.

The hosting organizations are the School of Economics, Business and
Accounting and the School of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences at the
University of São Paulo (USP). USP is one of the most prestigious public
universities in Latin America, with a population over 90,000 students and
about 6,000 professors and researchers full time in eight campuses of São
Paulo.

The VIII EECAL will be held on the first day at Av. Prof. Luciano
Gualberto, 908, and on the second day at Av. Prof. Luciano Gualberto, 403,
both situated inside the main campus of the University City (Cidade
Universitária).

The General Coordination of the Congress is in charge of the Professors
Gilmar Masiero and Yun Jung Im as well as their assistant Pierangeli
Comazzetto.

In order to enable a rich discussion and relevant interdisciplinary
exchanges, thematic areas of the VIII EECAL cover most areas in Social
Sciences and Humanities. In that sense, the Academic Committee will
evaluate proposals on the following subjects and related areas:

• Policy and International Relations;
• Economics, Management and Social Sciences;
• History and Literature;
• Hallyu and other entertainment industry issues.

Relevant dates:

February 6th, 2017 - Proposals (expanded abstracts)
March 28th, 2017 - Communication of accepted papers for the meeting
July 31st, 2017 - Delivery of the final versions

A proposal should be submitted with 1,500 words including the title,
key-words, objectives, assumptions, methodology and initial bibliography
(this will not be counted as part of the 1,500 words). If possible, it must
be submitted with substantive progress of unpublished ongoing
investigation. A short CV of the author(s), with particular emphasis on
their experiences, previous research and publications on Korean Studies
must be attached in a separate Word file.

Guidelines for final papers:

Articles must be original and have a maximum length of 10,000 words in
Spanish, Portuguese or English including bibliography; tables and graphs.
Please observe the Word Times New Roman 12 format, double spaced with the
page numbers in the middle of the bottom page. Graphs and tables may be
included in the body of the text, but should be also sent as Excel attached
files in order to facilitate the work of eventual publication.

The citation style, which you are asked to respect, will be the APA 6th
edition, whose use is exemplified in the following link:

Working papers of graduate and undergraduate researches

Two(2) panels for working papers of Grad and Undergrad students will happen
as parallel sessions. The aim of these panels is to enable the discussion
among senior and young researchers interested in Korean Studies. The rules
remain the same to the proposition of other works.

Evaluation Committee

The proposals received will be reviewed by a committee composed of
coordinators of previous meetings. The decision to submit a proposal to
VIII EECAL assumes, in advance, the acceptance of the verdict of the
Academic Committee, whose character is final. The scientific rigor,
innovation and thematic originality of papers and the previous track record
of Korean Studies and adherence to the theme of this call will be the main
elements for the Committee to select the paper to be presented at the
Congress.

Sponsoring participation

The VIII EECAL seeks to finance travel expenses in economy class and the
lodging in the city of São Paulo to the authors who are selected, with the
support of the Academy of Korea Studies and the institutions that are
holding the event. In the case of collective works, it can only finance the
attendance of one author at the meeting. In some cases, depending on the
resources available, the organizers could provide partial support for
transportation or accommodation to undergrad and graduate student
participants of the parallel sessions.

Coordination of VIII EECAL at: [log in to unmask]

Important remark

The EECAL meetings carried out up today in several countries of Latin
America were sponsored by the Korea Foundation. Recently, however, there
has been a reorganization of duties between the Korean Foundation and the
Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), in which the latter institution now will
be responsible for granting funds for this kind of congress. As our
proposal will be submitted in December and the grant will be announced only
in February, we’d like to stress that the VIII EECAL is conditioned to the
AKS grant confirmation.
