Call for Applications: Fellowships in 2016/17

IN-EAST and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21), jointly offer fellowships in 2016/2017. Application deadline: June 12, 2016

The Institute of East-Asian Studies (IN-EAST) and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21), both research institutes at the University of Duisburg-Essen, jointly offer up to four six-month fellowships in 2016/2017. The common theme for the collaboration of both host institutions and for the fellowships is “Trans-border Cooperation in East Asia at the Regional/Global Interface”. We are especially interested in studies that link up questions of governance and cooperation on global and regional issues with existing or emerging and innovative patterns of organizational/institutional design in East Asia.
In this vein, we welcome theoretical as well as empirical contributions from the Social Sciences (Sociology and Political Science, Economics, Business, Law and Psychology) or the Humanities. Projects might address one or several of the following topics:

  • Global governance and regional cooperation from an East-Asian perspective
  • Transnational or trans-border cooperation in East Asia
  • International and transnational organization of activities in East Asia
  • The role of informal and formal institutions in establishing networks and cooperation in East Asia
  • Cooperation and uncertainty in East Asia: institutional arrangements at the regional/global interface
  • Public and private authority beyond the nation-state: emerging patterns in East Asia
  • Transnational diffusion of institutions and innovations

At the Institute of East Asian Studies, more than 70 scholars from various academic disciplines are engaged in both research and teaching on contemporary East Asia, focusing on the economies, politics and societies of China, Korea and Japan. Research is carried out by the DFG-sponsored Research Training Group 'Risk and East Asia', the BMBF-funded IN-EAST School of Advanced Studies, the latter focusing on Innovation in East Asia, and many individual research projects. The IN-EAST establishes a new research focus on transnational studies (Further information: http://www.in-east.de).
The Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research is a research institute sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It seeks to contribute towards a better understanding of the possibilities and limits of transboundary cooperation. By building a learning community, researchers from different disciplines and world regions develop an innovative framework for contemporary cooperation research that enables the exploration of new options for global public policy (Further information: http://www.gcr21.org).
Both institutions are pleased to announce their Joint Call for Applications for fellowships in 2016 and 2017. The earliest start date possible is October 2016. Fellows, who are required to have a completed Ph.D., will join the Centre or the Institute for a period of six months. Fellowships include a working space in fully equipped offices at one of the two host institutions and, if applicable, a competitive stipend commensurate with the applicant’s level of professional experience. Fellows are expected to contribute to our overall lines of research and to embrace our multi-disciplinary environment. Regular attendance at the Institute and the Centre is thus required, implying residency in Duisburg or the Rhine-Ruhr area in most cases. The working language at both institutions is English.
Applications (in English only) must include a cover letter, your CV with publication list, a concise research proposal (3–5 pages) plus one relevant publication. Please indicate your preferred period of stay. Please submit your application only electronically using our website.

The online application form will be available from 1st May 2016: http://www.gcr21.org/index.php?id=355.

The application deadline is 12th June 2016. We particularly encourage female researchers to apply.
