Dear Mich Organic Listserv,
This is information that may be of interest to you and you may want to take action! Youmay want to give Senator Stabenow and Senator Peters a call or email and let her know
your preference of this bill…
Regarding our right to know on GE labeling. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) will call for "closure" which will end debate and push for a vote. The bill will then need 60 votes to pass.
The latest amendments to the Roberts Bill make it the “Anything but Labeling Bill:”
- Voluntary labeling would be law.
- Labeling would consist of QR codes, links to websites, social media information – anything BUT a product label indicating the presence of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients.
If you want the right to know what is in your food, it is critical that you call your Senate offices and ask them to
vote NO on the Robert's bill and support mandatory labeling if this is what you believe is the right action.
Contact Carl Peters and Debbie Stabenow to share your opinion.

The late, great political columnist Molly
Ivins, who railed relentlessly against money in politics, would be all over the GMO labeling fight. She’d be especially keen to tackle the next battle, set to take place any day now in the U.S. Senate.
On Thursday (February 25) this week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry will take
up a bill introduced last week (Friday, February 19) by Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.). Roberts’ bill aims to establish a voluntary labeling plan that would block Vermont from enacting its mandatory GMO
labeling law on July 1.
Monsanto’s minions in the U.S. Senate know they’ll have a tough time getting 60 votes, enough to pass a bill that preempts Vermont and other states
from enacting mandatory labeling laws. So there will likely be amendments made, in the hope of making the bill—a bill opposed by more than 90 percent of Americans—more palatable to Senators worried about upcoming elections.
