Postdoctoral Position: STEM Education Research at the University of Washington

Full-time Postdoctoral Position (Research Associate, UW Job Code 0148) for 18 months (100% FTE), beginning September 1, 2016, to work on the STEM-Dawgs program funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The grant is supporting the development and analysis of new programs to increase the academic success of underprepared and underrepresented students and their retention in STEM majors.

Candidates should have completed their PhD in a STEM discipline or STEM education in the last 3 years, and have well-established skills in either 1) statistical analysis of complex datasets, or 2) qualitative educational or psychological research, in addition to a demonstrated interest in acquiring further skills in both quantitative and qualitative discipline-based education research. The successful candidate will have exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills. English fluency is required. We prefer candidates with experience in project management and familiarity with current pedagogical research at the post-secondary level.

Responsibilities: The postdoctoral fellow will undertake qualitative research on the impact of two STEM-Dawgs projects: 1) a course-based undergraduate research experience, and 2) a companion course for underprepared students in general chemistry.  In addition, the post-doc will pursue qualitative and quantitative research on the impact that competitive majors have on STEM retention, and assist with ongoing work studying/evaluating achievement gaps in introductory STEM courses. The postdoc will be expected to co-author publications communicating the results of these studies.

The postdoc will have opportunities to collaborate with a diverse network of faculty, postdocs, and graduate students—locally through the UW Biology Education Research Group (BERG) and nationally through participation in the Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research (SABER).

The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Scott Freeman in the Biology Department.

The University of Washington is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.

To apply: Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy statement, and names, mailing addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers of three references to Dr. Scott Freeman ([log in to unmask]). Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2016 and continue until the position is filled.
