Abstract:
On January 16, 2016, Taiwan, the only democracy in the Chinese-speaking
world, elected Dr. Tsai Ing-wen as the first female president and gave her
party, DPP, a majority in the legislature for the first time since Taiwan
democratized in the 1990s. This talk will focus on the following questions:
Why did the ruling KMT suffer such landslide defeat? What are the
implications for the development of cross-Strait relations? How will the
elections influence U.S. foreign policy toward China and Taiwan?
