Project Description

Mobile telecommunications have emerged as the primary way that individuals communicate with one another. There are now close to 7 billion users globally, with every country having at least one operator provide mobile services. Through successive generations of mobile handsets, the services that can be enjoyed have improved – from talking to one another to sending SMS, surfing the web and now using a wide variety of apps. In emerging markets there are many more mobile than fixed telecommunication subscribers. This reflects the leapfrogging that has occurred in many emerging markets, as well as the inherent affordability of mobile services in these markets compared to expensive fixed connections. As mobile services have been diffused and adopted across a myriad of emerging markets, new business models have appeared that reflect the unique characteristics of these markets. One area where new business models have emerged relates to the development and operation of network infrastructures, while another are the services that are delivered through these networks. Of particular significance is the use of mobile devices to deliver financial and government services (broadly defined).

Within the context of emerging markets, this PhD project will identify and then critically evaluate the business models that have been adopted by operators and others alike. The project will initially focus on network infrastructure before encompassing services like financial services and healthcare. African countries, in particular, have been at the forefront of mobile financial services, while infrastructure related innovative business models can be found in Latin America and Asia. The overarching aim of the project is to shed light on the interplay between techno-economics (infrastructure) and socio- economic drivers (government services, universal service etc.) within a rapidly changing and regulated strategic industry.
