Dear Colleagues,

If you are an AIB member who does Industry Studies research, please consider submitting your work to the 2016 Industry Studies Conference in Minneapolis. With its grounding in observations of firms and workplaces, Industry Studies research draws on a wide range of academic disciplines and fields, and is naturally allied to International Business. The 2016 conference will be hosted at the downtown Minneapolis campus of the University of St. Thomas where AIB Fellow Stefanie Lenway serves as Dean of the Opus College of Business.

The full Call for Papers is posted below. Note that only an abstract is required for consideration, and the deadline is December 7.  We hope to see you there!

Industry Studies Association Call For Papers

2016 Industry Studies Conference

(Jointly with LERA 68th Annual Meeting)

https://www.industrystudiesconference.org

May 24-May 26, 2016, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Submission Deadline: December 7, 2015

We cordially invite submissions of individual papers and panels of papers for the 2016 Industry Studies Conference, to be held May 24 - May 26 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Industry studies research is grounded in observations of firms and workplaces and in a deep understanding of the markets, institutions, and technologies that shape the competitive environment.  It draws on a wide range of academic disciplines and fields, including economics and other social sciences, management, operations research, engineering, labor markets and employment relations, and other related research and policy areas.

The Program Committee seeks papers and panels that would not typically be found in methodology-focused or single-discipline conferences, and is especially interested in attracting papers that are unique in their emphasis on observation and insight into a particular industry, or that consider how knowledge gained in studying one industry can provide insights into other industries.

The 2016 Minneapolis conference will be hosted on May 24-25 by the Opus College of Business, University of St. Thomas (http://www.stthomas.edu/business). The conference will also precede and overlap one day  with the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) Annual Meeting. The combined ISA/LERA day on May 26 will be held at the Millennium Hotel, downtown Minneapolis, and will include a joint reception, joint plenary and parallel sessions. Like the Industry Studies Association, LERA shares the strong belief that context matters and that research should be grounded in a deep understanding of markets, institutions, and technologies. LERA members who would like to submit to papers to ISA can be assured that every effort will be made to place you in panels on the joint day if your paper or panel is accepted. Please indicate in your submission if you would you’re your paper to be considered for a joint ISA/LERA session. Sharing part of our meeting with LERA will allow ISA members to network with industry practitioners who attend LERA and learn about the variety of research from LERA members that includes topics on similar themes to ISA research. For more information on LERA see http://leraweb.org.

2016 Special Theme

Meeting the Productivity Challenge

Increases in productivity have long been recognized as the engine of economic growth.  The well being of economies and their citizens depends upon growth in productivity.  As a result, there is great interest from stakeholders, policy makers, and business leaders in how to create and sustain productivity growth.

The industry studies community is well positioned to shed light on this question.  To that end, this year’s special theme seeks papers that address this question through an industry studies lens.

Topics of interest relevant to this theme include but are not limited to:

The Submission Process

Researchers may submit abstracts of up to 250 words for single papers. The Program Committee will assign accepted papers to sessions. In addition, we strongly encourage researchers to submit organized panels comprising multiple papers on a common theme (e.g., using one methodology across multiple industries, or multiple diverse approaches to a common problem in a single industry), particularly if it ties into the special theme for this year.  We particularly encourage panels that include or are entirely composed of practitioners to bolster the relevance of the conference to industry. The deadline for abstract and panel submissions will be December 7, 2015. We also encourage submissions of full papers by junior (untenured) faculty to the Rising Stars Best Paper Competition. A plenary composed of the winner and finalists of the Giarratani Rising Star Competition will present their work as part of the conference program. Submissions can be made at https://www.industrystudiesconference.org.

A number of research streams are listed below relevant to industry studies. However, these streams are not meant to be exhaustive, and the committee also welcomes submissions in the “General Industry Studies” category. This would include industry-specific as well as cross-industry papers and panels. The program committee may shift papers and panels from the general industry studies stream to other more specific streams where appropriate.

The conference is open to all researchers. A discounted conference registration fee will be charged to members of the Industry Studies Association (to become a member, please visit www.industrystudies.org).

Please feel free to contact the Conference Program Leadership below with related questions.
