Post-Doctoral Position in Geoscience Education

Clemson University invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Geoscience Education.  The position is funded through the National Science Foundation’s Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE): Pathways into Geosciences program and will explore methods for encouraging students to pursue a geoscience-related career.  The core approach of the project will be to implement a program of experiential learning opportunities for non-geoscience majors enrolled in service courses.  These non-major outreach activities will be closely tied to field and research curricula within the Geology degree program and will integrate traditional geoscience methods with emerging online tools for teaching and extracurricular learning.

The setting for the project is Clemson University’s Geology BS program in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences. The Geology program has concentrations in hydrogeology and environmental science in addition to its traditional geoscience curriculum. All Geology majors complete a three-year sequence of undergraduate research courses.  With an enrollment of about 20,000, Clemson University has a strong STEM focus and has been ranked as a Top 25 Public University by US News and World Report for eight consecutive years.

Job description: The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work with a collaborative team of faculty and students, taking a lead role in the development and implementation of project activities.  This work may include organizing and mentoring undergraduate research projects in the lab and/or field for groups of geoscience majors as well as non-majors enrolled in introductory geoscience courses.  It is expected that through this position, the candidate will design and conduct research in any aspect of cognitive and affective components of learning such as field-based experiences, identity, social capital, motivation or other themes that impact entry to a major/career in the geosciences for a diverse population of students.  Preparation of journal articles reporting this research and participation in conferences to disseminate the results will be encouraged.  The appointment will be for one year with continued funding for up to three years contingent on progress.

Qualifications: A PhD in geosciences is preferred but other areas such as science education or related fields will be considered.  Experience in education research will be viewed favorably.  Familiarity with web-based technologies for teaching, including, but not limited to, social media, mashups, and web mapping interfaces, as well as GIS experience will be considered an asset.

Applications instructions: Submit cover letter, curriculum vita, and three references as a pdf to EEESPROCE@clemson.edu.  Review of applications will begin November 1, 2015 and continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date for the position is January 4, 2016 or when a suitable candidate is found.
