Designing Educational Innovations for Sustained Adoption: An Online Workshop

You are invited to apply to participate in a three-week, online, interactive workshop to help you develop a strong propagation plan for your education development project. The dates of the workshop were selected to accommodate the
3 November 2015 due date for NSF IUSE:EHR Exploration and Design Tier for Engaged Student Learning & Institution and Community Transformation proposals and the January 11, 2017 due date for NSF IUSE:EHR Development and Implementation Tiers for Engaged Student Learning & Institution and Community Transformation proposals.

The RFP for the IUSE program states that "transferability and propagation are critical aspects for IUSE:EHR-supported efforts and should be addressed throughout a project's lifetime by ensuring attention to designing for use in a large variety of institutions" (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2015/nsf15585/nsf15585.htm). The project “Collaborative Research: Increasing the Impact of TUES Projects through Effective Propagation Strategies: A How-To Guide for PIs”  has been supported by NSF to develop resources to help educational developers prepare propagation plans intended to promote sustained adoption of instructional strategies and materials. The workshop is intended to help you develop and improve the propagation plan for your NSF proposal. You should submit your application at https://goo.gl/HhM6gY by 4 September 2015.

Three synchronous two-hour online sessions will be offered 2:00-4:00 PM EDT on three consecutive Fridays
Friday, 25 September 2015
Friday, 2 October 2015
Friday, 9 October 2015
Participants should agree to participate in all aspects of the workshop. This includes the three synchronous online sessions as well as 4-6 additional hours per week in preparation for the online sessions.

Workshop participants will:
(a) Prepare a structured three-page summary using a template prepared by the project team. The initial three-page summary will be due 11:59 PM EDT,
Sunday, 20 September 2015
(b) Use the Designing for Sustained Adoption Assessment Instrument (
http://goo.gl/hwSYBf) to evaluate three other structured three-page summaries prepared by other participants.
(c) Read the assigned portions of the online How-To Guide (
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B22xJ4TwrTx2Sm91RGd5aFkzU0k/view?usp=sharing)
(d) Revise the structured three-page summary for the second and third sessions and evaluate the revised summaries of three other participants

We estimates that participants will need to invest about 4-6 hours before each synchronous two-hour online session. While this is a substantial commitment, the experience of the project team in working with other educational developers suggests that the time invested will help participants prepare a competitive proposal.

In the three-week workshop, the instructors will:
(i) Present the framework we have developed to help educational developers prepare their propagation plans,
(ii) Facilitate interaction among participants as they evaluate proposed propagation plans using the Designing for Sustained Adoption Assessment Instrument (
http://goo.gl/hwSYBf), and
(iii) Address participant questions about elements of the framework.

A draft syllabus for the online workshop can be found at
https://goo.gl/I7oVjQ.

The number of participants will be limited to 24 to promote interaction among participants and with the workshop facilitators. Participants will be selected from applications that are received by the 4 September deadline.
