The Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) and member Dan Keane of Keane’s Wee Bee Farms is hosting an on-farm field day as part of its farm-based education programming, Beekeeping for Pollination and Honey Production.

When: August 17 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where: Leaman’s Green Applebarn in Freeland, Michigan.
What: This event is designed to provide beekeepers, farmers market vendors and food system educators with an opportunity to learn more about beekeeping and to network with their peers.
Who Can Attend?: Registration is required to attend and is FREE for MIFMA members and $30 for non-members, who will receive a MIFMA membership with their registration.
Topics Include: beekeeping best practices, pollination, apiary equipment for keeping bees and processing honey, and Michigan Department of Agriculture Rural Development (MDARD) rules and regulations for honey sales. Farm-based education programs are designed for networking, sharing and free-flowing conversation.
“Farmer-to-farmer educational opportunities support producers, allowing us all to learn from one another,” said Dru Montri, MIFMA Executive Director. “This will be a fun, informal day on the farm with other farmers, beekeepers and educators who share similar passions. Events like these strengthen farmer networks which, in turn, benefits farmers markets across the state.” With her husband, Dru also owns Ten Hens Farm located in Bath, Michigan, and sells at the Bath Farmers Market, so she knows first-hand how valuable farmer-to-farmer events can be.
For 125 years and seven generations, the Leaman family has nurtured and tended the family farm, which started with just 14.5 acres of land in 1889. They have expanded to 100 acres total, and 10 acres of trees throughout the years, as well as many rows of raspberries, blackberries and pumpkins. The Leamans sell fruit, cider, baked goods and more at their farm stand, which is an agritourism destination, as well as the Midland Farmers Market. Also hear from Dan Keane, owner of Keane’s Wee Bee Farms. Dan produces and sells local honey and beeswax products, he will be talking to attendees about bees for pollination and honey production.
