I am seeking a PhD student to join my laboratory to study educational assessment while completing a PhD in the Environmental Sciences.  The successful applicant will complete the core curriculum for the Environmental Sciences PhD at Wright State University (https://science-math.wright.edu/environmental-sciences-phd/program#tab=curriculum) and complete a dissertation related to quantitative educational measurement.   Five years of funding are available through a combination of graduate research and teaching assistantships, and the student may start as early as Fall 2015 (August 2015).  While the focus of the research is negotiable, research is currently underway on development and implementation of assessments of water systems understanding, argumentation, and next generation science learning.  Research during the first 1-2 years will focus on development and validation of these assessments as quantitative measures.  In Years 2-3, the focus will shift to using these assessments for evaluation of the effectiveness of an educational video game in middle school-level blended and distance learning contexts.  The final 2 years of the program will focus on development of an independent research program in educational assessment and obtaining relevant college-level teaching experience.  Interest in educational assessment, a strong command of basic statistics, background in the biological or earth sciences, and the desire to pursue graduate coursework in the environmental sciences, is required. Background in Rasch/Item Response Theory and multi-level modeling is preferred but not required.

The student will be enrolled in Wright State’s Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences Ph.D. Program.  Application requirements include: Bachelors degree in a supporting discipline (biology, earth science, chemistry, physics); GRE scores within the last 5 years; minimum TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based) or 250 (computer-based) and ability to pass a verbal English test (foreign students only).  Preferred qualifications include: Masters degree or equivalent experience; a background and interest in water systems/ecology, with interest and/or experience in quantitative educational research; good communication skills.

See http://www.wright.edu/academics/envsci/index.html for further information on the Environmental Sciences Ph.D. program at Wright State University, including program requirements, application procedures and stipends.  Please contact William Romine ([log in to unmask]) for more information about projects in the lab and the program prior to submitting an application.  In your e-mail, please attach a current curriculum vita (CV) and letter of interest.
