Subject: Memorial Service for Mr. Tendaji Ganges

Dear Friends and Colleagues :

Last Friday, the KCP office heard of the passing of our dear friend, colleague and mentor, Mr. Tendaji W. Ganges.  Tendaji spent many years carving a niche for himself in educational opportunity programs on college campuses across Illinois and Indiana before joining the University of Michigan’s Office of Educational Initiatives (EOI).   Tendaji was a passionate and naturally gifted orator with an earthy sense of humor, a spellbinding storyteller with an anecdote from his own long life for every occasion.

Inspired by his own experience as a high school student, Tendaji’s primary focus in the span of his 42-year career had been to prepare young people for college.  The Office of Educational Opportunity Initiatives (EOI) is a program he built from the ground up. The office offers five pre-college programs and five college programs that cater to students from underrepresented groups and those from areas where college access and success rates are below the national average.

A tireless advocate for the State of Michigan’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative, Tendaji successfully turned the dream of higher education into reality for thousands of students who otherwise might not have had a chance.
