Invitation to apply for a Posdoctoral Researcher position in the learning sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the learning sciences or a closely related field. The postdoctoral researcher will join the team of an NSF-funded project focused on permafrost and the important role it plays in global climate. The project, which is a collaboration between UAF and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), builds on informal learning experiences at the nation’s only Permafrost Tunnel, located in Fox, Alaska. The tunnel is a multi-sensory environment, rich with ancient ice, old bones, strong smells, and dust. The project aims to study and export the tunnel experience into several different products, including traveling table top exhibits and a 2,000 square foot exhibition at OMSI. In conjunction with the team, the incumbent will research the impact of different categories of objects related to the Permafrost Tunnel (real, replicated, virtual) on learning. A portion of the research will take place on the museum floor of OMSI. Travel to rural Alaskan villages and to Oregon is an expectation of this position. Relocation to Oregon in later stages of the project may be possible or necessary. The position has an expected start date of October 2015 (may be negotiable), and will end in August 2018.

Required and preferred qualifications

The ideal candidate will have: 1) experience in evaluation and/or educational research; 2) demonstrated expertise in qualitative methods, especially video content analysis; 3) strong oral and written communication skills; 4) ability to work effectively in diverse settings and with a team; 5) ability to work independently; 6) strong organizational skills and reliability. A working knowledge of natural science content (geosciences and/or biology) is helpful but not required. Experience with museums or other informal learning venues is also helpful. A Ph.D. in the learning sciences or related field is required.
