Sunny Crest Youth Ranch - Sunfield, MI

Hello Colleen,

Thanks for taking the time to speak with me regarding our desire to start an organic garden out here at the youth ranch.

Sunny Crest Youth Ranch is a 501(c)3, Michigan state licensed therapy ranch for at risk boys ages 11 through 17. We are currently a safe home for 18 boys with plans to expand our facility to provide for another 9 in the next year.

SCYR provides many life skill training activities including wood working, mechanics and livestock care. This year, as our SCYR community grows, we are going to start a garden to provide fresh produce for the children and to help stock our pantry with canned goods for next winter.

With the help of MSU's Garden to Cafeteria Guide we are actively involving the boys in the complete process and I was wondering if there may be some students (or staff) who would be interested in volunteering to help us out. We are planning a hoop house for extended growing and hydroponics as well as an enclosed garden with access for poultry (natural pest control).

I am looking forward to any help you may be able to send my way and if you need additional info or have questions, please feel free to call.

Thank you again for your time and consideration.
