Call for Papers

Submission deadline: 16 January 2015

The International HRM field is a broad and expanding research discipline, incorporating many facets such as cross-cultural management, comparative HRM, and strategic IHRM. Much of this field focuses either on the country-level of analysis, explaining why certain HRM activities fit a given institutional and/or cultural context, or at the firm-level of analysis, exploring how a multinational enterprise (MNE) balances its global and local priorities. Increasingly, we are starting to see research emerging at the regional level of analysis, e.g. Asia-Pacific, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Insights also complement those at the individual level of analysis, stemming from the international organizational behavior field of study.

Building on this broad research base, sessions on the future of IHRM during the 1st Global Conference on IHRM held at Penn State in May 2013 yielded further important insights. Specifically, we discussed how IHRM needs to move towards a higher level of theorizing, rather than being limited to country descriptions, in order to bring in greater generalizability and explanatory power. Such research is certainly taking place, and we would like to encourage this trend with the 2nd Global Conference on IHRM at Penn State.  We encourage papers that explore the ‘big picture’ findings, allowing us to understand our observations beyond describing them, answering the ‘why’ questions, and providing implications for practice.

To this end, we invite submissions that cover conceptual, theoretical, and empirical investigations that adopt various methodologies and highlight the context-specific nature of HRM systems. Papers that address but are not necessarily restricted to the following topics are especially invited:

·      Institutional and cultural perspectives on IHRM

·      HRM in multinational enterprises

·      High performance work systems in different national settings

·      HRM models unique to emerging markets

·      Expatriate management and global careers

·      Global leadership development

·      Global talent and knowledge management

·      Diversity, aging population, and generational challenges in different national settings

·      Ethics and corporate social responsibility in the globalization of work
