Last Chance to Speak Up on USDA Deregulation of 2,4-D Crops
Monday, September 8, is the deadline for comments to the USDA regarding Dow AgroSciences’ petition for nonregulated status for its new “Enlist” genetically modified corn and soybeans, which have been engineered to have resistance to 2,4-D (the principal ingredient
in Agent Orange) as well as glyphosate (Roundup), quizalofop, and glufosinate.
There has been considerable farmer and consumer response to both the USDA and the EPA on this issue – nearly 350,000 public comments were submitted to EPA as part of the agency’s pesticide approval process. In addition to public comment, 50 members of Congress
have sent
a letter to the USDA expressing “grave concerns” about “the multiple adverse human health, environmental, agronomic and socioeconomic harms that approval of 2,4D crops will likely cause.” In spite of this, neither the USDA nor the EPA has given any indication
that Dow’s requests will not be approved.
However, the USDA has been known to respond to public comment. As of yesterday afternoon, only 10,959 comments had been received. We urge you to take a moment to
tell the USDA how you feel about this issue.
