I am excited to invite you to a full weekend of public programming at the Broad MSU in conjunction with the exhibition, The Land Grant: Flatbread Society. Join us as we bake, break, and eat bread in the museum, dance to the music of Vetiver and the Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle, and engage with Flatbread Society members and scholars about land and grains. Artist Talk and Threshing Party
Hear from San Francisco-based artist Amy Franceschini on The Land Grant: Flatbread Society at 6 PM, then join the Broad MSU and members of the Flatbread Society in a grain threshing party with live music from Vetiver and the Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle at 7 PM. Material Encounters: What We Make
Join Flatbread Society artists, local makers, and other specialists in a discussion about what we make, how we make it, and what inspired the methodology. Discussion topics will include the alchemy of bread making and distilling spirits, small-scale farming and the process of distributing food from farm to table, as well as agrarian mythology and folklore. Symposium: Food As Thought
Examine contemporary viewpoints on the nature of farming and agriculture, our changing relationship to grains, and the commodity of natural resources. Invited guests include Dr. Lawrence Busch, University Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for the Study of Standards in Society at Michigan State University; Dr. Tara McDowell, Associate Professor and Director of Curatorial Practice at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia; Claire Pentecost, artist; and Amy Franceschini, artist. Flatbread Society is a project initiated and rooted in Oslo by Futurefarmers as part of Slow Space, a public art programme for Bjorvika harbour in Oslo produced by Situations and commissioned by Bjorvika Infrastruktur. www.slowspace.no.
