I would not check them because of the greater chance of damage.

Most musicians will tell you that it is always a big problem trying
to fly with musical instruments.   For some bigger instruments, they
often make a person buy an additional ticket so the instrument can
sit in it.

Some airlines are better then others.  So, if United Air is not good,
try using Delta, etc.
