BUS 201 (740) – FS14 & SS15: Hive – Intro to Business Model Generation

Everyone has great ideas. We all think of “amazing, mind bending, earth shattering” ideas every day. Yet it takes a different mindset to move from idea to implementation.  The design of this course is to provide you with the basic tools and perspective to make your concept a reality. Enrollment will allow students to have exclusive access to the Hive, a new “idea laboratory” located in Wilson Hall, as well as onsite mentoring from faculty and external professionals to help bring their ideas to fruition. We will work together to develop cross-functional teams around ideas and develop functional business models over the course of the semester.  Concepts will include but are not limited to: idea generation, problem identification, value proposition, identifying target customers, pricing and cost structures.

The course is scheduled to meet at the Hive (C108 – Wilson Hall) on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. but will also involve activities / events / speakers outside of scheduled class times that will be arranged during the semester.

BUS 491 (002) – SS15: The Art of Starting: Intro to Entrepreneurship

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Peter Drucker

‘Disruptor’, ‘job creator’, ‘conqueror of chaos’, ‘creative destroyer’, ’innovator’ ‘risk taker’, ‘the new rock stars or champions of commerce’, these are but a view of the names given to entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is widely discussed and taunted, but not widely understood. This course takes the view that "entrepreneurship is 'an activity that involves the discovery, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities to either solve some problem, or bring about some desired change. Thus at their core, entrepreneurs are “change agents”. They may change:
o   what products or service individuals or organizations use;
o   how an individual or organization operates;
o   what factors are combined to produce some product, service, or desired result;
o   who benefits from some product or service; and
o   where, or when some product, service, or methodology is used.

The course focuses on three key aspects of the entrepreneurial experience.

1.      Entrepreneurial Mindset

2.      Ideation / Venture Creation

3.      Business Development

Course is scheduled for Spring 2015 on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2:40-4 p.m at C107 McDonel Hall.  Course is the prerequisite for those seeking an Entrepreneurship Minor.
