I do not like an automatic tip, but a lot of restaurants do it, especially
for large groups - more than 4 or 6 or whatever, including several in
the Lansing area. I usually tip generously anyway, but if a restaurant
forces me to tip, I usually do not choose to return there.
Note that a tip is supposed to be for your service person[s]. The
cooks and management is already supposed to be paid a living wage.
But that is not always the case. Also, sometimes slow service is not
the fault of the service staff (waitresses). It can be a problem in
the kitchen or even management. Also, some cultures regard fast service
as impolite - trying to rush the customer out the door too quickly.
Particularly Latino cultures are like that. I don't know about Korea.
Originally tips were for two things - to encourage or reward EXTRA good
service and to show off and impress your guests you take to dinner.
But, now, the pay rate in most restaurants is so low that tips become
a necessary part of the serving staff' regular pay and not something
extra. Even though we have a 'minimum wage' here restaurants are
allowed by law to pay their service staff less than the minimum wage
because the law presumes they make it up in tips. And, in a college town
most tipping is not enough to make up poor pay rates. This is really a
poor way to create a law and run an industry, but that is the way it is.
So, try and be kind to your service staff.
