It depends on where you are flying and when and whether you need a direct
flight or can take a multiple hop route and whether you have to go
or arrive on a specific day or can be flexible. There are lots of
web based booking agencies nowdays. It often changes which has a
better price. Sometimes dealing directly with an airline on their
web site is best. That happens often with Delta, for example.

Following the notes there is a list of agents but it hasn't
been updates for several years.
If it is an international trip, especially to Asia I would start
with http://www.delta.com/ and create an account for yourself
and see what you can get. If that is unsatisfactory, try some of
the many others.
