Development Director

The Institute for Food and Development Policy, also known as Food First, is seeking a person to join the leadership team as a strategic team member who clearly values the essential relationship between fundraising and program development/ implementation.  This person must be committed to radical social change and to ending racism in the food system. 

Food First is a research institute funded by individuals, bequests, grants, book sales, teaching and public speaking.  This broad funding mix allows the organization to take a strong, independent stance on food issues and to amplify the voices of social movements fighting for structural change.  Using the lens of food sovereignty and food justice, Food First has worked to expose myths about the causes of global hunger and poverty for 39 years.  The Development Director has an opportunity to play a significant role in the US and global food movement.

Qualifications for this position include:

*BA (required), MA a plus.

*Understanding of and commitment to food sovereignty and food justice.

*A minimum of two years’ experience working in a nonprofit environment.

*A proven track record in fundraising for a progressive cause or organization.

*Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

*An ability to connect with donors of various ages and backgrounds.

*Excellent follow-through and attention to detail, with the ability to track and manage

multiple tasks and demands.

*Familiarity with fundraising software and donor management databases.

*Advanced knowledge of both old and new media; including the most common

platforms  (Facebook, Twitter, crowdfunding, etc.).

*Flexible, committed to continuous learning, a can do attitude, ability to thrive in an

academic policy-driven setting.

* Sense of humor.

*Commitment to ending racism, sexism and all other forms of discrimination.

 
*Preferred, but not required: Bilingual in Spanish, French, Portuguese; background in marketing, public relations and/or the publishing industry; familiar with Word Press; experience with event planning .

Responsibilities include:

1.       Implement major donor cultivation and solicitation in close collaboration with the executive director and board members to maintain and deepen commitment and expand the total number of major donors.

2.       Plan and manage fundraising campaigns and activities.

3.       Provide input for budgeting and fundraising goals.

4.       Plan fundraising events in coordination with the executive director and board, including Food First’s 40th anniversary celebration in 2015.

5.       Coordinate with program staff to identify grantmakers and assist in developing, submitting and tracking grant proposals.

6.       Evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising activities.

7.       Draft donor appeal letters and coordinate mailings of print publications.

8.       Oversee social media accounts in collaboration with program staff and interns.

9.       Other duties as required.
