Abstract Submission Deadline - May 15, 2014

Retailing is an integral part of economies and societies but its economic and social contributions have not been fully assessed. Yet, transnational retailers have been making inroads into emerging markets and together with dynamic local retail entrepreneurs are challenging existing distribution and consumption structures. In mature economies where retailing has assumed high degrees of concentration, rationalization and international procurement issues like the occurrence of “food deserts”, food scandals or the labour situation at procurement sites have led to questions regarding the social responsibility of retailers.  The aim of this two day conference is to bring together the retail industry, policy makers, regulators and researchers from academia and consultancy firms to focus on the impact of retail initiatives in emerging and mature markets with the aim of exploring overarching themes and strategies which retailers employ to enhance their contribution across markets.

•             Retail and economic sustainability

•             Retail and cultures of consumption

•             Retail and rural development

•             Retail and urban development

•             Retail and regulations

•             Retail and infrastructure development

•             Retail and service quality

•             Retail competition

•             Retail and ethical business

•             Retail and technology

•             Retail and the handicraft industry

•             Retail and food security

We especially encourage work on the above topics and on emerging markets, yet to enable wide participation we will also accept abstracts for a general track that deals with all other retail issues in Asia.
