Our 8th Annual Global Business Forum will run during the week, March 17-21, 2014, on the main Baylor University campus in Waco, Texas, and our theme will be "Big Data in a Shrinking World." Unless otherwise indicated, all of the events are free and open to the public, but seating is limited at the luncheon on Thursday, March 20, which requires free registration.
We will open with a Monday afternoon film, "The Age of Big Data," produced by BBC in 2013. On Monday evening and Friday afternoon, we are adding a new element to the Forum.  Global Business Connect<http://globalfromwaco.jimdo.com/about-gbc/>, a student organization, is organizing  "Global Issues Challenge" that will begin on Monday and conclude on Friday.
On Wednesday, March 19, at 7:00pm, Mark Hurd (President of Oracle) will give our keynote address.  On Thursday, we will have a full day of presentations, from 9:30am until 4:45pm, with speakers from IBM, Teradata, Coca Cola, Splunk, Kaggle (which organizes crowdsourcing of data science solutions via online competitions), Baylor Scott and White, and others.  Bob Kantner, an intellectual property attorney who is a partner at Jones Day in Dallas, also happens to be Chair of the World Affairs Council of DFW.

Ben Becker, Principal at Becker Strategies, is a CRM strategy and IT mobilization consultant with over ten years of industry experience building customer and marketing intelligence solutions for the banking, travel, e-commerce and retail energy sectors. Mr. Becker's recent leadership roles have included marketing and technology positions at United Airlines and predecessor, Continental Airlines, as well as Direct Energy, North America's largest retail energy provider. Recently, he launched Becker Strategies to transform organizations' vision of data driven customer-centricity and the wealth of new technologies available into specific action plans that drive measurable value for companies and customers.
Mr. Becker studied Management Information Systems and Computer Science at Baylor University and later earned an MBA from the Hankamer School of Business with a specialization in CRM.

Patrick Brady is currently a Practice Area Lead for Information Management and Analytics at Slalom Consulting, a business and technology consulting firm that delivers solutions through a national network of local offices. Patrick is based in Dallas and is responsible for building client offerings around Data Strategy and Big Data. He works closely with a wide range of clients across various industries to build analytical solutions that provide both immediate and long lasting value.
Originally from Ireland, Patrick moved to the United States in 1998 where he worked at EDS and HP before joining Slalom Consulting in 2011. Patrick holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Coventry University in the UK.

William Cukierski is a data scientist at Kaggle, the leading platform for predictive modeling competitions and one of Fast Company's top ten innovative companies in big data. He consults on applied machine learning and data analytics for numerous Fortune 100 companies, non-profits, and research groups.
William has a bachelor's degree in physics from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Rutgers University, where he published on applications of machine learning to cancer research. Prior to joining Kaggle, he was a top finisher in challenges ranging from predicting stock movements, to forecasting consumer spending, to automated essay grading. He is a chair of the KDD Cup and regularly speaks on topics in data science.

Neil S. Fleming, PhD, is currently Vice President of Quantitative Sciences in the Center for Clinical Effectiveness of Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas, Texas. He was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the STEEEP Global Institute, a consulting practice that began in 2011 to work with health care organizations to implement quality and patient safety best practices. Prior to that position, Dr. Fleming spent seven years as Vice-President for Health Care Research for the Baylor Health Care System and was Director of the Center for Health Care Research in the Institute for Health Care Research and Improvement.  Dr. Fleming's publications have appeared in journals such as Health Affairs, Health Services Research, Medical Care, and The International Journal for Quality in Health Care, and he was associate-editor with Dr. David Ballard on the recently published book (2013): Achieving STEEEP Health Care that details the Baylor Health Care System's rigorous approach to quality.
Prior to joining the Baylor Health Care System in 2004, Dr. Fleming spent over 20 years as a consultant in several industries, and was also a statistician at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics and a medical consultant at EDS Corporation on the Texas Medicaid Program. Dr. Fleming received his BS in mathematics from Bucknell University and his PhD in health services research from Vanderbilt University.

Michael Fulmer is a graduating Ph.D. student from Southern Methodist University, who received his undergraduate and master's degrees in economics from Baylor University. His research interests are in the areas of identifying and quantifying global extremal price transmission pathways, extreme value theory, machine forecasting, predictive analytics and text analytics. In 2009, Mike captained SMU's national-champion SAS data-mining shootout team, and since that time has worked as an adjunct professor at SMU and at the SMU Dedman College Richard B. Johnson Center for Economic Studies.

Shirley Hunter is Global Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at Teradata, a leading provider of enterprise analytic technologies and services that include Data Appliance, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence and CRM Solutions.  Since 2002, she has been responsible for the global partnership between Teradata and Capgemini, a global consulting organization. Teradata and Capgemini work together with clients to align business processes and technologies and to identify innovative solutions and opportunities derived from Enterprise Data Warehousing and Big Data technologies.
Before she joined Teradata in 2002, Ms. Hunter served as a director of Field Engagement at Compaq (1999-2001) and a Region Director at NCR Corporation (1984 - 2001).   She completed a Bachelor of Science at Baylor University and an MBA at the University of Houston.

Mark Hurd is President of Oracle Corporation and a member of the company's Board of Directors. He joined Oracle in 2010. As President, Mr. Hurd oversees the corporate direction and strategy for Oracle's global field operations, including marketing, sales, consulting, alliances and channels, and support. He focuses on strategy, leadership, innovation, and customers. Mr. Hurd's leadership in managing past acquisition integrations has enabled him to take a significant role in Oracle's acquisition strategy. He is also responsible for Oracle's global business units that build products for specific industries such as telecommunications, financial services, health sciences, retail, utilities, and public sector enterprises.
Before joining Oracle, Mr. Hurd served as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, and President of HP, where his focus on customers, innovation, improved operational efficiency and execution led to significant company growth. Prior to that, he spent 25 years at NCR Corporation, where he held a variety of management, operations, sales, and marketing roles, ultimately serving as the company's Chief Executive Officer and President and leading a successful effort to improve operational efficiency, strengthen the product line, and drive growth.
Mr. Hurd earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1979 from Baylor University, where he attended on a tennis scholarship.

Robert Kantner is a partner in the Jones Day law firm and an experienced trial lawyer who has focused his practice on intellectual property cases and counseling, cybersecurity matters, commercial and antitrust cases for technology companies, and professional malpractice cases. Bob has gone to trial 33 times, serving as lead trial counsel in 25 of those trials; his clients have prevailed outright in 70 percent of those cases. He has served successfully as counsel for both plaintiffs and defendants. Bob has tried copyright, patent, trade secret, and trademark cases. He has experience with telecommunications, networks, software, and electronic payment technologies. In a significant number of IP cases, he has handled antitrust claims. In addition, he has represented law firms accused of professional malpractice in IP matters.
In 2013, Bob published five articles on protecting trade secrets internationally and cybersecurity. He has counseled clients regarding data breaches, compliance with federal cybersecurity legislation, claims for negligent enablement of cybercrime, open innovation and reverse innovation issues, and trade secrets protection plans.

Kerry McNair is a Vice President for Product Supply at the Coca-Cola Company, responsible for customer collaboration and joint value creation between Walmart and the Coca-Cola system in 15 countries.  He joined Coca-Cola in 2005 as a Director of Supply Chain Optimization after years of service as Group Manager for Procter & Gamble (1990-2005) and a Captain in the US Army Corps of Engineers (1984-1990).  Mr. McNair completed his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds an MBA from the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University.  He is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.

Rodney Smith is an IBM fellow and Vice President of the IBM Emerging Internet Technologies organization, where he leads a group of highly technical innovators who are developing solutions to help organizations realize the value of big data. His early advocacy in the industry has played an important role in the adoption of technologies such as J2EE, Linux, Web services, XML, rich Internet applications, and various wireless standards.
As an IBM Fellow, Rod is helping lead IBM's efforts around big data analytics and the application of IBM Watson like technologies to business solutions, helping companies make better decisions more quickly for improved business outcomes. His early identification of emerging technologies has led to a sustained record of achievement in the global software community. Rod has authored numerous invention patents and disclosures, and is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the TJ Watson Design Excellence Award. He is also a long time member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Rod is a computer science graduate of Western Michigan University, and holds a M.A. and B.A. in Economics with a concentration in Math from Western Michigan University.

Anand Srinivasan is a senior analyst for Bloomberg Research, covering semiconductor, semiconductor capital equipment, and technology hardware companies. Prior to joining Bloomberg in March 2010, Mr. Srinivasan covered the technology sector as a portfolio manager/research analyst at Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and Lazard Asset Management, where he helped launch and run the Lazard TMT Advantage Fund. Prior to his buy-side roles, Mr. Srinivasan worked at Merrill Lynch first in its Research department and then in its Private Client Group, evaluating portfolios, asset classes and sectors for recommendation to corporate, institutional and retail clients. Additionally, Mr. Srinivasan's Technology industry experience includes being an Electronic Commerce Project Manager at GE Capital IT Solutions and business development consulting with a start-up mobile device software maker. Mr. Srinivasan has an undergraduate degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Mangalore University in India and a Master's in Business Administration from Iowa State University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Institute and the New York Society of Securities Analysts.

Michael Wilde is Chief of Awesome in the Office of the CTO at Splunk, which has quickly established itself as the leading platform for indexing and real-time operational analysis of machine data. In 2005, Michael was the first sales engineer hired at Splunk, where he worked with the technical team on product development, introduced the system to early customers, recruited a sales team, and became the company's first Sales Engineering Manager. Michael represents Splunk at trade shows and other major events, such as South By Southwest, and has pioneered the "Splunk Ninja" video series to support sales and training for a global audience.

Before joining Splunk, Michael was a Business Development Manager and Principal Sales Engineer at Sigaba (2002-2005), a Senior Systems Engineer at Marimba (2001-2002), and a Systems Engineering Manager at Bowstreet (2000-2001).  He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and earned a degree in business administration from California State University at San Marcos.
