LCAN Brings Partners Together for Dual Enrollment Program

One of the identified goals of Shiawassee Postsecondary Access Network (SPAN) is to enhance the communication around early college and dual enrollment options in Shiawassee County and increase the percentage of students enrolled in postsecondary education opportunities.

Research completed by Jobs for the Future (2012) showed high school students who had completed a college course before graduation were nearly 50 percent more likely to earn a degree from a college within six years than students who had not participated in dual enrollment.  Evidence has also shown early/middle college programs and dual enrollment programs lead to increased academic performance and a decrease in the need for remediation at the postsecondary level. In recognizing the positive impact of dual enrollment/early college initiatives on college preparation, access, and success, the Shiawassee County RESD (SRESD) has partnered with SPAN to begin offering opportunities for students to enroll in college courses in the 2013-14 school year. SPAN's initial discussion with various statewide 4- year public universities has centered on equity of opportunity (i.e., lack of transportation, tuition) and SPAN has worked to bring in dual enrollment courses from a statewide 4-year public university to offer courses to students on their own high school campus.

With grant funds awarded to the Shiawassee Community Foundation and SPAN by the Kresge Foundation, Central Michigan University is piloting a program in Shiawassee County to allow high school students the chance to dual enroll in college classes, earning both high school and college credits at no cost to the student or family.

Paying for College - Videos

Now that FAFSA season is upon us and students are starting to hear back from colleges, many students are wondering where they will find the money to pay for college.  Similar to the Michigan College Application Week video we shared in the fall, the Paying for College video is the second video of a three-part KnowHow2Go series.

The video can be utilized when promoting FAFSA and other Financial Aid related events and information. The first video is the full length version running 3:23. There are 3 additional PSAs based off of the full length version. The videos are available through the ItsMiLife YouTube channel so anyone can access and use. Please take and share the videos widely in your community.

Michigan College Goal - FAFSA Completion Support

Want more of your students to aim for college? Michigan College Goal is an initiative focused on helping students successfully complete the FAFSA. Once students see how much aid they can get, 9-in 10 students who file the FAFSA are motivated enough to enroll in college. And that helps build a college going culture at your school. Here's how to make that happen:

1. Announce Michigan College Goal to your students through morning announcements and in the classroom.

2. Post and distribute flyers. 100 flyers and 1 poster will be mailed to ALL Michigan high schools in January and you can print off more here: http://www.micollegegoal.org/Volunteers/Home.aspx. They can be found on the right hand side of the page under the announcements column.

3. Announce Michigan College Goal through emails, newsletters, and auto-call messages to parents saying something like, "How much could your seniors get for college and career education? Most get thousands of dollars in aid. Find out when you file the FAFSA. Get free help filing the FAFSA at a College Goal Event near you on February 9th. Details at www.MICollegeGoal.org."

Early Coursework and College Experience Predictors of Persistence at a Hispanic-serving Institution

Source: Journal of Hispanic Higher Education

Utilizing survival analysis, the researchers examined two key first year courses, mathematics and English, and tested whether they were predictive for long-term student success as measured by persistence to graduation at a Hispanic-serving research university. While first math and first English courses were significant, SAT score was not for Hispanic and Black students. High school grade point average (GPA) was significant for Hispanic students but not for White or Black students.

Research Brief: Why Students Do Not Prepare for Math Placement Exams

Despite an increased focus on the instruments used during the assessment and placement process, little attention has been devoted to how community college students experience assessment and placement. In this research brief, they use interview and survey data to illuminate student experiences with and perspectives on the math assessment and placement process.

Gallop Poll: Americans still see college education as very important

Source: Gallop Economy
Authors: Frank Newport and Brandon Busteed

PRINCETON, NJ -- Seven in 10 American adults believe that a college education is very important, up significantly since the 1970s and 1980s. In 1978, when Gallup first asked the question as part of a Phi Delta Kappa survey, just 36% of Americans considered a college education to be very important.

The importance Americans place on a college education is particularly relevant as questions arise concerning the relationship between the cost of a college education and its value. Additionally, various studies and anecdotes from recent college graduates lament the soft job market for Americans with a college degree...Continue reading
