Feb. 15, 2014 Date: January 23, 2014 11:50:47 AM EST To: [log in to unmask] Reply-To: Rita O'Brien <[log in to unmask]> Urban Gardener Certification Program 2014 Lansing, MI – Hunter Park GardenHouse is preparing to offer another year of the Urban Gardener Certification Program! This program, intended for beginner-intermediate gardeners, features 10 sessions of instruction in basic yard & greenhouse gardening skills appropriate for high density, small lot neighborhoods. The ten class sessions are held on select Tuesdays from 6:00pm – 7:00pm and select Saturdays from 12:30pm – 2:00pm, between February 15th and May 20th. (Click the link below for specific class dates.) All classes are held at the Hunter Park GardenHouse, located on the 1400 block of E. Kalamazoo Street in Lansing, MI. Participants have hands-on instruction as they plant and care for a garden together over the length of the program. The course utilizes a lab and lecture style format. Registrants attend Saturday workshops with special guest lecturers, and additional Tuesday evening labs with hands-on practice with GardenHouse staff. A participant in last year’s program said they “liked the fact that we started from the beginning, with starts; planted veggies over several classes and followed the spring planting schedule.” The purpose of the Urban Gardener Certification Program is to equip community members with the knowledge and skills to sustainably produce food in an urban setting. Participants will have the confidence and know-how to take course material and apply it to their own yards and community gardens. From garden planning to harvesting and fall clean-up, this program offers a holistic gardening experience and a solid foundation for anyone looking to produce their own food. The GardenHouse serves as a demonstration hub for year-round garden education. Neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community, and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood. Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health and become better connected with the community.
