Ageing2Agility:

Multi-stakeholder Technological Forecasting for the

Multi-generational Challenges in the Organisation

Guest Editors:

Businesses and organisations throughout the world are facing the challenges of employing a workforce that is ageing in a world that is ageing.  Companies must address the issue of integrating fast-growing Generation Y populations into workforces led and managed by people with very different (often more traditional cultural) life experiences.  Addressing these issues presents challenges for technological forecasting and opportunities for innovation.  Organisations will have to adapt both to ongoing technological development and social changes such as an aging workforce and customer base.

This special issue will explore new ways of forecasting (i) the technological trends that are emerging and their relevance to ageing, as well as (ii) the specific technological and social innovations that ageing will require from organisations.  While some trends are certain or can be explored through established forecasting methods, others are much more uncertain and challenging.  Hence it is timely and appropriate to gather both the research of academics and the experiences of professional practitioners in this domain.

Areas of interest in which there has, to date, been little substantive research on forecasting include:

The social change agenda includes the impact of these developments upon the practice of management; their implications for change in the organization; what they mean for the development of the next generation of leaders and managers; and how they will assess the role of technology development and innovation in assisting the marriage of ageing with agility – both for organisations and those who work in them.

Multi-stakeholder support and commitment of government, business and the academic sector offer the promise of addressing significant weaknesses in the ability of government, at all levels, to develop, fund, implement and sustain public policy initiatives which future prosperity in a multi-generational world demands.  There is a need for new models encompassing new approaches and exploration of vibrant, diverse examples of multi-stakeholder involvement both in public policy and organizational strategy and practice, that include the role of technology and technology forecasting.

We are looking for submissions that have a technological focus and future-orientation.  They must relate technological innovation(s)/ forecasts to social impacts.

Specifically, we are seeking submissions that address one or more of the topics below, though this list is not an exhaustive or prioritised.  Submissions from academics and/or informed practitioners must focus on technological developments with relevant organisational change impacts and/ or the social impact of technology in ageing, e.g.:

·         Theoretical or experience papers that analyse the link between technological developments and the wider issue of ageing in the workplace

·         Theoretical models for multi-stakeholder engagement in technology development in relation to ageing and well-being at work

·         Theory-embedded examples of successes and/or failures in multi-stakeholder technological/ social engagements worldwide that provide clear insights and lessons

·         Challenges of multi-stakeholder involvement in technology forecasting, development and implementation that cut across sector borders or geographic regions

·         Evaluative criteria for multi-stakeholder involvement that can be applied to diverse technology challenges and/or in diverse cultures

·         Relevant measurement criteria and/or systems that can be used in technological forecasting, innovation and organisational change

·         Exploration of the trade-offs for the organization of their involvement in technology  development and implementation associated with aging

·         How organizational reputation (private, public and non-profit) can be effective in building multi-stakeholder involvement in technological and social change

·         How overall organizational strategy can be successfully integrated into the development and implementation of technology development policy for well-being at work.

Review Process and Submission

·         All manuscripts will be double-blind reviewed

·         Manuscripts should follow the style guidelines of Technological Forecasting and Social Change, an international journal   - see also below

·         Manuscripts are submitted with the understanding that they are original, unpublished works and are not being submitted elsewhere

·         Manuscripts should be submitted as an email Word attachment to [log in to unmask]  by January 15th, 2014

·         Please indicate both in the email heading and on your paper clearly that your submission is for the “Technological Forecasting and Social Change, an international journal” or “TFSC

·         Submission requirements:

o   First page: manuscript title and author(s) names, institutional affiliation(s), contact information

o   Second page: manuscript title and brief (100 word maximum) biography of each of the authors.

o   Third page: manuscript title and brief (250 word maximum) abstract of the paper.

o   Fourth page: Research Highlights.” These short bulleted items should state (not characterize) your research results, as specifically as possible (e.g., “Uptake of nanotech is faster in the auto industry than in agriculture,”  NOT  “Analysis shows differences in uptake among industries”) and succinct, impactful interpretations (e.g. “Agriculture in Europe is missing a two-billion-euro opportunity”). The Research Highlights should not be a condensation of your paper’s abstract, but should be framed as if for a press release. Think of the educated press (The Economist, WIRED, Technology Review) and the trade press of the industry your article addresses. Attention from those publications increases your own reputation as well as TFSC’s.

o   Fifth page and following: manuscript title followed by the text of paper.

o   Third, fourth, and pages following should have no reference to, or name(s) of, the author(s)

o   The paper is between 4000 and 5000 words in length.  In exceptional circumstances a longer paper of exceptional quality may be accepted.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Carla Millar and Martin Lockett,

Guest Editors TFSC.
