Call for Papers
Ageing2Agility:
Multi-stakeholder Technological Forecasting for the
Multi-generational Challenges in the Organisation
Guest Editors:
Professor Carla Millar, Fellow, Ashridge, UK and Professor, University of Twente, NL
Dr. Martin Lockett, Dean of Academic Development, Ashridge, UK
Businesses and organisations throughout the world are facing the challenges of employing a workforce that is ageing in a world that is ageing. Companies must address the issue of integrating fast-growing
Generation Y populations into workforces led and managed by people with very different (often more traditional cultural) life experiences. Addressing these issues presents challenges for technological forecasting and opportunities for innovation. Organisations
will have to adapt both to ongoing technological development and social changes such as an aging workforce and customer base.
This special issue will explore new ways of forecasting (i) the technological trends that are emerging and their relevance to ageing, as well as (ii) the specific technological and social innovations
that ageing will require from organisations. While some trends are certain or can be explored through established forecasting methods, others are much more uncertain and challenging. Hence it is timely and appropriate to gather both the research of academics
and the experiences of professional practitioners in this domain.
Areas of interest in which there has, to date, been little substantive research on forecasting include:
The social change agenda includes the impact of these developments upon the practice of management; their implications for change in the organization; what they mean for the development of the next
generation of leaders and managers; and how they will assess the role of technology development and innovation in assisting the marriage of ageing with agility – both for organisations and those who work in them.
Multi-stakeholder support and commitment of government, business and the academic sector offer the promise of addressing significant weaknesses in the ability of government, at all levels, to develop,
fund, implement and sustain public policy initiatives which future prosperity in a multi-generational world demands. There is a need for new models encompassing new approaches and exploration of vibrant, diverse examples of multi-stakeholder involvement both
in public policy and organizational strategy and practice, that include the role of technology and technology forecasting.
We are looking for submissions that
have a technological focus and future-orientation. They must relate technological innovation(s)/ forecasts to social impacts.
Specifically, we are seeking submissions that address one or more of the topics below, though this list is not an exhaustive or prioritised. Submissions from academics and/or informed practitioners
must focus on technological developments with relevant organisational change impacts and/ or the social impact of technology in ageing, e.g.:
·
Theoretical or experience papers that analyse the link between technological developments and the wider issue of ageing in the workplace
·
Theoretical models for multi-stakeholder engagement in technology development in relation to ageing and well-being at work
·
Theory-embedded examples of successes and/or failures in multi-stakeholder technological/ social engagements worldwide that provide
clear insights and lessons
·
Challenges of multi-stakeholder involvement in technology forecasting, development and implementation that cut across sector borders
or geographic regions
·
Evaluative criteria for multi-stakeholder involvement that can be applied to diverse technology challenges and/or in diverse cultures
·
Relevant measurement criteria and/or systems that can be used in technological forecasting, innovation and organisational change
·
Exploration of the trade-offs for the organization of their involvement in technology development and implementation associated with
aging
·
How organizational reputation (private, public and non-profit) can be effective in building multi-stakeholder involvement in technological
and social change
·
How overall organizational strategy can be successfully integrated into the development and implementation of technology development
policy for well-being at work.
·
All manuscripts will be double-blind reviewed
·
Manuscripts should follow the style guidelines of
Technological Forecasting and Social Change, an international journal - see also below
·
Manuscripts are submitted with the understanding that they are original, unpublished works and are not being submitted elsewhere
·
Manuscripts should be submitted as an email Word attachment to
[log in to unmask]
by January 15th, 2014
·
Please indicate both in the email heading and on your paper clearly that your submission is for the “Technological Forecasting
and Social Change, an international journal” or “TFSC”
·
Submission requirements:
o
First page: manuscript title and author(s) names, institutional affiliation(s), contact information
o
Second page: manuscript title and brief (100 word maximum) biography of each of the authors.
o
Third page: manuscript title and brief (250 word maximum)
abstract of the paper.
o
Fourth page:
“Research Highlights.” These short bulleted items should state (not characterize) your research results, as specifically as possible (e.g., “Uptake of
nanotech is faster in the auto industry than in agriculture,” NOT “Analysis shows differences in uptake among industries”) and succinct, impactful interpretations (e.g. “Agriculture in Europe is missing a two-billion-euro opportunity”). The Research Highlights
should not be a condensation of your paper’s abstract, but should be framed as if for a press release. Think of the educated press (The Economist, WIRED, Technology Review) and the trade press of the industry your article addresses. Attention from those publications
increases your own reputation as well as TFSC’s.
o
Fifth page and following: manuscript
title followed by the text of paper.
o
Third, fourth, and pages following should have no reference to, or name(s) of, the author(s)
o
The paper is between 4000 and 5000 words in length. In exceptional circumstances a longer paper of exceptional quality may be accepted.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Carla Millar and Martin Lockett,
Guest Editors TFSC.

Microfoundations have become increasingly influential in strategic management research. The basic argument is that individuals and their interaction matter fundamentally to strategic issues. However, if a micro-foundations project is to become viable it needs to grapple with important questions of theory development, operationalization, aggregation, empirical measurement, data collection, and statistical implementation that are currently unresolved. Microfoundations have to make a substantive difference in the way we teach and research strategic management.
We are gathering a range of established scholars and practitioners and we hope that you will join them in Copenhagen. We mix specialist tracks on “strategic decision-making”, “top-management teams”, “entrepreneurship”, “strategic human resources”, “methodological issues”, with panels keynote talks to create an excellent opportunity to examine the challenges to strategic management theory, empirics and teaching represented by microfoundations.

The Organizations and Social Change (OSC) track responds to the growing interest in issues at the intersection of business and society, such as climate change, workforce diversity, economic development, governance, inequality, and globalization.
The study of organizations, management, and society has never been more important and dynamic than it is today. Harnessing the financial, organizational, and technological resources and techniques of business and entrepreneurship, often in partnership with
the public and non-profit sectors, can generate innovative solutions to these concerns. The interdisciplinary OSC track builds on the Management and Marketing Departments expertise to prepare graduates to be active academics and leaders in meeting these complex
challenges.
We offer a unique blend of academic and practical applications in organization theory. Our renowned facultys research interests span business disciplines as well as political economy, sociology, and womens studies. We are deeply involved in current issues of management and organizational studies through writing, research, and ongoing work in industry and government. A recent $3.1 million award from the National Science Foundation has created specific funding for two students a year for this PhD track for students interested in the intersection of business, policy and science in complex environmental problems such as climate change and coastal risks. Current PhD students did their Masters level studies in business, education, philosophy, finance, international management, and sociology (although a Masters is not required, some prior research experience is helpful). You can learn more about the OSC research group and current students from the Organizations and Social Change blog.
The Centers and Institutes at the College of Management sponsor studies and seminars on important issues of interest to students of organizations and social change. They include the Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Regional Competitiveness, the Center for Collaborative Leadership, and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Across the University, PhD students can participate in the Center for Social Policy, the Global Environmental Governance Project, the Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture, the School for Global Inclusion, or the Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters. Our students also take courses and attend seminars at the wide range of universities in the Boston area, with which our faculty have connections, including Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis, Harvard, MIT, Simmons, and Tufts.
Please spread the word about our PhD program, which prepares scholars to expand knowledge, teach students, and advise leaders from a critical perspective. UMass Boston is guided by a mission of social justice and community involvement, and it is an extraordinary place to learn about how people can change organizations, and how organizations can change the world. Students will find a vibrant community of scholars and students with whom to share their passion and with whom to prepare for the next stage in their professional development. The application deadline is January 15, 2014. Prospective students are welcome to visit the campus and meet faculty. Please contact

Professor and Norris Family Endowed Chair, Angelo State University, Texas USA
"Translating Culture, Negotiating Difference: Religion, Law, and Business" Conference at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, March 28-29, 2014. The concept of cultural translation, popularized by anthropologists Bronislaw Malinowski and Edward Evans-Pritchard, intimates that negotiating cultural difference is analogous to learning a foreign language. The metaphor retains its usefulness today in that it points to the possibility, but also the problems, of communication in an increasingly interconnected world: assumptions, miscommunication, and the incommensurability of epistemological categories. The conference seeks to put a magnifying glass to them by focusing on three areas of international activity that involve cultural translation: religion, law, and business. Our hope is that a comparative perspective on their distinctive ways of resolving these issues would offer new insights.
The Center for Intercultural Studies at Saint Louis University invites proposals for papers that take an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to explore the practice of cultural translation in these three fields. A paperwould ideally include a specific case study illustrating a distinctive problem and its theoretical underpinnings. Submissions should include: a one-page abstract of the paper, with a title and name of the author; the author's brief curriculum vitae; postal address; email address; and phone number. Complete proposals should be emailed as attachments in Microsoft Word to: [log in to unmask]. with a subject line "Translating Culture Proposal." The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2013.

ABOUT SYMPOSIUM: This symposium aims to advance research on business
models in global competition. International firms, whether long-established MNEs or emerging market new ventures, create and capture value through business models that are undergoing a radical transformation worldwide. A business model describes a formula
of unique value creation. It typically consists of a unique customer value proposition and profit-making scheme, as well as key resources and processes coupled together as a system to operationalize value creation. The quest for building global competitive
advantages in today’s market landscapes, such as the permeating use of information technologies, increased reliance on emerging markets, heightened threats from low-cost rivals, and growing pressure to be locally resilient yet globally integrated, prompts
business model innovations. Emerging opportunities, including those at the middle income level and bottom of the pyramid in developing countries, and new challenges, such as the economic slowdown in the developed world, put additional pressure on international
firms to innovate with their business models. In global competition, the business model describes how the firm creates value distinctively in the global marketplace by combining technology, capital, products, brands, brainpower, and value-creation activities
that suit peculiarly well foreign or global market needs, resulting in an advantage over its global rivals and sustained profitability. As business activities reach out internationally, a business model will have extended and enhanced ramifications for MNE
performance at both global and local levels. Transnational operations also imply that business models may vary across different countries in which the MNE operates and competes.
While “innovating business models” suggests many potential research questions, this symposium emphasizes presentations and discussions
that span theoretical boundaries and disciplines to create new perspectives or frameworks that improve our understanding of the processes, forces, paths, evolution, outcomes or contextualized factors associated with developing, innovating, or executing business
models for global competition by multinationals from developed and developing countries.
CONFIRMED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: With an intention to provide an academic
platform that nurtures research on business models in global competition and further
leads the discourse on some fresh perspectives on designing and innovating business models for multinational companies, this symposium will be featured with keynote speeches by internationally recognized scholars in the area, such
as Oded Shenkar, Steve Tallman, Yadong Luo, Klaus Meyer, Jeff Reuer, Marshall Meyer, among others.
We welcome international business scholars and Ph.D students to attend. Like previous symposiums hosted by SYSBS, there will be no
registration fee for this year’s symposium, a commitment by the School to support the academic community and frontier research on international business. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ms. Josephine Gan at
