*JOURNAL OF WORLD BUSINESS CALL FOR PAPERS*

*Institutions, Entrepreneurship and Co-evolution in International Business*

While the strategic importance of institutions to firms’ performance is
well recognised in IB, the nexus between institutions and agency (i.e.,
purposeful action by entrepreneurial individuals, groups or organisations)
remains under-developed.

Early perspectives in neo-institutional theory emphasised the power of
institutions to determine patterns of action and organisation, thereby
explaining the convergence of MNEs and managerial practices within the same
institutional environment. Institutions, however, do not only constrain,
but also are outcomes of human agency. Organisational actors (individuals,
firms, coalitions, etc.,) are not only bound by institutions, but also
enact and reconstruct them. Indeed, ‘institutional work’ and the role that
organisations and individuals play in institutional creation, maintenance
and change has come to the fore in academic debates, albeit primarily
outside IB.

The aim of this JWB special issue is to encourage in IB this emerging and
more nuanced view of the nexus between agency and institutions, and to
stimulate research that promotes new theory and empirical, public policy
and practitioner insights on the relationship between institutions
(residing at various levels of analysis) and agency in IB.
